Veronica Mars reaches Kickstarter goal and gets the green light
The Veronica Mars Kickstarter project is the fastest and largest fund raiser in the history of crowd-funded movies, and is sure to inspire many copycats in the business. The $2 million goal was reached shortly after 6 pm. Warner Bros. is now committed to a summer start date for the movie, which is based on the Veronica Mars series that launched in 2004 on UPN and ended its run as part of The CW in 2007. A big screen adaptation has been promised to the fans ever since the series was canceled, and now those plans are finally coming to fruition.
Rob Thomas had this to say about reaching his goals set forth this morning.
"My mind is blown. I've been fantasizing about this taking big and had to tell myself, 'Stop it, Rob, you're being silly. You're setting yourself up for disappointment. And now today has exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up. We better deliver."
Kristen Bell continued with this.
"I knew Veronica Mars fans were cool, but I had no idea they could rally with such power. They are unstoppable - just like Veronica. I will have a permanent blush on my face, feeling so lucky to be associated with this entire thing.
The Kickstarter goal was Warner Bros.' last ditch effort for getting Veronica Mars to the big screen. The movie will get a limited theatrical release as well as a VOD release. Rob Thomas added that the studio was eager to try out this Kickstarter campaign.
"Kristen Bell and I met with the Warner Bros. brass, and they agreed to allow us to take this shot. They were extremely cool about it, as a matter of fact. Their reaction was, if you can show there's enough fan interest to warrant a movie, we're on board."
Here is the video that helped launch the Kickstarter campaign.
Veronica Mars revolves around a young female high school student who transitions into college moonlighting as a private investigator under the tutelage of her detective father. Not many story details have been released at this time about the movie, but it is known that Veronica will be taking on a case during her high school reunion. You can still donate money to the project, which will go to upping the budget of the movie:
Veronica Mars comes to theaters in 2014 and stars Kristen Bell, Tina Majorino, Julie Gonzalo, Ryan Hansen, Jason Dohring, Francis Capra, Chris Lowell, Enrico Colantoni. The film is directed by Rob Thomas.

@skywise I forgot that Tudyk is a series regular on Suburgatory. And Gina Torres has found a place on Suits and other shows. They all seem to be doing well.

@ejk1 Very true. Also new fans are being turned on to Firefly all the time. I know several people i have introduced the show to personaly who love it and are not particular fans of sci fi. Im amazed that to this day I read about or talk to new fans consistantly.
Also, besides those you mentioned, Alan Tudyk did some pretty awesome voice work for Wreck it Ralph. Not quite the same thing but its nice to see most of the crew working.

@skywise True, but the landscape has changed on a few fronts. Aside from Whedon's ascendance, Nathan Filion has a higher profile thanks to Castle's popularity, Morena Baccarin's work on V and Homeland, and the following Firefly has gained over the last decade. There are many more factors in favor of a successful sequel to Serenity than not.

They need to get a kick starter for Awake. That show was getting f*cking good, and contained by far one of the most original premises I've seen in a while - film, television, or otherwise. The execution (acting, writing, visuals) only made the concept better. Reawaken Awake! While you're at it, give me my "Fables" show.

Wow, that's awesome! I might need to check this show out now.
Now to just get fans like these to raise money for a Friday Night Lights movie, a O.C. movie, and other TV show reunion movies I've always wanted to happen.

Insane. I wonder if they'll keep it on for the whole 29 days?

@ejk1 I would like to think that is true but even though there was strong fan support Serenity did not make back its money in theaters. We were very lucky to have Serenity but I highly doubt we will ever have more.
I am happy rewatching Firefly though.

@skywise@spludge Don't get me wrong, I'm right there with you two wanting more Firefly, but with Whedon's recent success, I don't think Kickstarter is needed. If and when he decides to add to Firefly's lore, I think he'll get sufficient studio backing.

@ejk1 No of course not...its one of my all time favorite sci fi films.
A momentary lapse of reason...we'll call it.
Shamed!
