It's only fitting that on a long weekend that spanned two holidays in two straight days, that a holiday-themed film would be the new record-holder. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Garry Marshall's new film Valentine's Day set a new President's Day holiday weekend box office record with an estimated $66.9 million.

The race for second place over the four-day weekend was a close one, with Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief taking in $38.8 million with The Wolfman close behind at $36.5 million. Avatar finished in fourth place with $30 million, bumping its mammoth domestic gross to $667.6 million through nine weeks and Dear John rounded out the top 5 with an estimated $18.8 million.

It was also reported that overall business at the box office was on the rise dramatically over last year. The top 10 at the box office earned $220.5 million, 25% more than the top 10 in last year's President's Day weekend frame.

Valentine's Day was released February 12th, 2010 and stars Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Hector Elizondo, Jamie Foxx. The film is directed by Garry Marshall.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief was released February 12th, 2010 and stars Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Trent Jones, Jake Abel, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan. The film is directed by Chris Columbus.

It was the only date movie out. Who wants to take their date to see Percy Jackson? Not me. This movie is made for girls. Valentine's Day is the holiday for girls. It was a movie bound for number one.

The fact that we Americans actually flocked to go see this pile of sh*t is just another example of why other countries think we're total idiots.

Actually Josh I have my fingers crossed that Shutter Island will indeed be number one. a lot of my fiends and even their friends and family are talking of how damn cool it looks, and they have no taste whatsoever, so hopefully it will make the money it will most likely deserve. :)

And then Leo has always got Inception to get more viewers.

$30 million for Avatar in FOURTH PLACE is pretty impressive, especially after nine weeks! I wonder if it will slide back into #1 or #2 in the next week. I can't see Shutter Island having the kind of box office clout that Valentine's Day or Percy Jackson does (but it will definitely be the better movie).
