UPDATE: 3/16/10 1:15 PM PST
Sci Fi Wire recently attended the MacGruber panel at the South by Southwest Film Festival, which Ryan Phillippe also stars in, and the actor confirmed his interest in the film.

"Yeah, I would," Phillippe said on March. 16 in Austin, Texas. "My son would looove it. He's 6 years old."

It's not just for the kids, though. Phillippe indicated he's gunning for the part himself. "I'm really into it," he said. "We'll see what happens, but yeah, it'd be fun."

We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further casting updates with The First Avenger: Captain America as soon as we have more information.

Original Story:
We reported last week that The First Avenger: Captain America has found its villain in Hugo Weaving and the search for the title character still continues, with another actor being mentioned for the role. Hitfix is reporting that Ryan Phillippe is the latest actor that Marvel Studios is considering to play The First Avenger: Captain America.

Last week we also reported that Garrett Hedlund and Mike Vogel were currently the front-runners and that Chris Evans was in contention for the role as well. With this latest news of Phillippe joining the fold, it's hard to tell who indeed is the front-runner for this role now.

Joe Johnston will direct the film based off a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The First Avenger: Captain America is currently set for a July 22, 2011 release date.

Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

you know what josh...you actually made some good points.

The girly thing is valid. It's a sublty way of dismembering the female sex, while insulting the male sex. You made me think! ;)

But i think you are picking the 'wrong' demographic to state this :)

Josh you opened this up, I merely was pointing out that you where talking about a social issue and most of everybody else was talking about the proper pick to do the movie justice, I didn't say you where wrong, just that you're talking about something else

    *Sigh*

The dangers of trying to argue with people without an education. I'm married to a woman with a University degree in gender studies, so I think I know what I'm talking about. But I'll leave you guys to your sandbox since there's clearly no point..

I want to point out the definition of the word, "Gay".
    -adjective
1.having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
2.bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.
3.given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.
4.licentious; dissipated; wanton: The baron is a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies.
    5.homosexual.
6.of, indicating, or supporting homosexual interests or issues: a gay organization.

If you look, the homosexual context is number 5, which was only made to that term in the 60's, when the term homsexual, shortend to "homo" was deamed offensive. I have gay friends, who would laugh at your attepts to make the word offensive. I think there are other terms that to a person of that sexual orentiation would find more hurtful. In a side note, people out west in the Arizona area use the word "gay" to describe funny bad. Such as a bad joke, or a bad movie.

But back to what this should be about... Cap should be a guy who is bulky in mass, but not over kill. Hounestly, Brad Pitt in Troy shape would be a good fit.

Well put Shadow. Phillippe would be the perfect choice for a character in the next Twighlight movie. That would better suit him, than kick ass Captain America. We don't need another Cap movie like the one from the '90s. That was completely awful! Ohhhhh, hmmmmmph....dry heave.

Josh, if you're talking to me, you're the ass, and talking out of it, because I proved my point, an everybody elses point, this discussion is about the right choice of Captain america, who is a masculine strong rough type character, whose iconic enough to be a legendary hero, like Batman, Superman, what have you, all these characters have people who are not effeminate play their roles, unlike Spider-man, now before you get you all pissy again, about nonsense, I'm not saying a man whose effeminate is weak or has no muscle, or whatever, what I'm saying is and most of everybody else is that Ryan Philippe is not the right choice, he's quite frankly the bad choice, he's not statuesque, that he doesn't command the screen as a hero, or iconic person, his past performances don't fit this role/character (not seen as an action hero), and that his looks aren't rough enough to either fit Captain America, nor the 1940's.

and my other point was that you taking offense about something indirectly as an insult to you or how you think, is ludicrous, did they say you were gay or effeminate, no, they stressed their opinion, some crudely, like yourself, and flew off the handle, hopping on anyone who doesn't agree with your stance in this world, just because they don't agree with what you say as predesignated and archaic constructs of a male personification, doesn't mean you need to threaten people for what they say, if you don't like it ignore it or get off this site, because I'm going to tell this right now, you can rant and rave and get pissy, hell you can even get your panties in bunch, but you know whats going to happen nothing, just like you'll dis-acknowledge what i'm saying, so will they of what your saying, its a f*cking fan site, grow some thick skin or get offended b every little thing, and rant and rave, and try to change peoples minds or Hollywood, and you can take this how ever you want to, I don't give a sh*t, and now you know and knowing half the battle

I stand by you, and agree with what your saying, Illuminati, this site is for fans voicing their opinion, and writing review, s and what have you and for someone to take offense of a comment made, indirectly as an insult, is ludicrous, especially over a masculine characters choice, theres no point to be so serious.

And the Twilight movies are for "emo" kids (who are jokes) and little preteen girls, the movies suck, and are unnecessary, so if you like the series you either a little girl or "emo" (which by the way is nothing to boost about or special) and are stupid, and I never seen the movie, and please get offended by that, and I'll tell you why the movies suck and are bad, and why you're a little girl

The point is that calling a man "girly" or any variation on it is buying into hegemonic constructs of masculinity, which is pedestrian, shallow, and offensive. Gender constructs are completely socially constructed, so just because Phillipe doesn't fit YOUR standards of masculinity (and the point is, they're not yours, they're archaic and backwards age-old perceptions) in no way makes him less of a man.

if someone uses the term "that's gay" to describe a situation/object/opinion/like/dislike/ it maybe seen as inappropriate.

BUT if describing someone's behaviour and sexuality, it's a bit more tolerable. i believe proper term is EFFEMINATE. Since 'most' gay men tend to be effeminate, the term 'gay' is used to identifying it. I do see the problem with that...but i do understand the usage as well

If i were to describe RICHARD SIMMONS...the words macho, gallant, muscular, strapping will NOT be used. He's is feminine, soft, timid, animated, overactive....hmmm...i wonder what other word that could embody this?

Let's not become the PC police on this board.(I still rememebr the morons who jumped on my for calling TWILIGHT return of the EMOs!...which i still stand by, lol)

So...lets accept our thoughts freely....and NOT bother correcting each other!

I agree Josh. One can choose from a plethora of other words to convey the issue without being insulting to those who are actually gay people. It's not right and I apologize on behalf of the others.

Best news from this article...HUGO WEAVING AS RED SKULL!!!

I don't see this happening. I think this is just to keep the news moving. I think Ryan is an OK actor but very limited. He shouldn't be on this set.

Capy needs to someone like HAL JORDAN type, commanding, noble, charismatic!

I'm with Hugo Weaving but Ryan Phillipe not such a good choice they need some who has a strong square jaw, looks right with blonde blue eyes, looks like they fit in the 1940's, is muscular and has a iconic persona that would do Captain America justice, maybe Two-Face Aaron Eckhart or Daniel Craig, but hes got a thick British accent he can't shake it, Bradley Copper maybe, all fit and are better the Ryan Phillipe for this part, I'm routing for Two-Face

I have no use for the former Mr. Witherspoon. I think I agree with Berto Spade. Padelecki seems to be the ideal choice. He's tall, he can act, and he's able to do very realistic fighting scenes.
