Tom Cruise may appear as Maverick in a new Top Gun sequel
Original Story Paramount Pictures is planning a sequel to their 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, according to a new report from Vulture.
Christopher McQuarrie will write the script, which will feature a cameo for Tom Cruise's Maverick. The studio has made offers to both director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to return as well. Vulture states that Tom Cruise is willing to return for a smaller role, given it isn't an "obvious" nod to the original, such as a now-hardened flight instructor.
27-year-old David Ellison, the son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, is a key figure in the sequel. He has raised $350 million to co-finance four Paramount movies, the first of which is Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible 4. His love for the original Top Gun lead him to becoming an aeorbatic and commercial pilot himself before attending film school and starting his own production company. He also starred in and financed the 2006 movie Flyboys.
No deals have been signed as of yet. We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details on a Top Gun sequel as soon as we have more information.
Top Gun was released May 16th, 1986 and stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, John Stockwell, Barry Tubb. The film is directed by Tony Scott.

I think the views on the first top gun here are mixed, but personally i liked it in 86, but by todays standards seems a bit cliched although i still enjoy watching it from time to time, i think it was the spirit of the film which delved into how people can change, and why those changes happen... love story or not, and believe me, i really hate love stories, but it was a great cinematic experience whether you admit it or not.
With that... i feel it is an unnecessary sequel. I feel with the indiana jones... damn them to hell... they started a very bad trend, to try and bring back sequels to films 20-25 years after the films were initially released...
lost boys, wall street, indiana jones, bill and ted, wargames, rocky, rambo, terminator (although 3 was made in 2003 it was still 12 years after the second), ghostbusters, beverly hills cop, mad max, and tron, just to name a few... some having been made, others on there way...
that being said it is also noteable to say that hollywood as all of us have unsparingly pleaded on a forum without hollywood hearing the cries, know that they have officially ran out of ideas, in fact it may even just be a machine that spits up lottery balls with a sequel name, a remake, or reboot plastered with hardened black ink to tell the studio execs which movie they are to make. so it is no suprise to me that a top gun 2, or top gun too, or a top 2un, or a TP2, or a top guns, or top gunz, or top gunned again, or top gun 2: return of top gun 1, or pot nug is going to be made... with or without tom cruise.
we cant stop hollywood. we can only stop it if we dont see these movies. plain and simple.

i kind of agree with the majority here that think that this should not be done. i really see no purpose to it. it really wouldn't be a sequel anyway since it's not about the original characters. basically it would be more like a reboot. or, in other words, it will pretty much be the exact same movie as the original, just with different actors. i mean, how DIFFERENT could the story for this one really be? buncha guys go to TG to see 'who the best is'. where is it going to vary from the original? what, the planes will be different? boooo.
ant what else is cruise going to be in this one but a 'hardened instructor'? didnt he end the first movie saying that he was going to be an instructor at top gun? ok, sooooooo yeah, not he DOESN'T WANT to be an instructor, 20 yrs later??
all this sounds pretty stupid to me.
though i do have faith in tony scott's work, i love all his movies, but i think he's going to pass on this one. and bruckheimer, of late, hasnt been too spectacular, save for the POTC, NT, and TRANSFORMERS movies. g-force, POP, and sorcerers apprentice were all kinda lame.
this is going to end up like those lame ass sequels to 'the lost boys'.
TOP GUN 2 IS JUST A BAD IDEA.

Okay people, the writer's strike has been over for two years now, you can stop pushing out sequels and remakes just because you own the rights to something that hasn't been touched in over 20 years. It's no longer necessary; it's just annoying.

i'm about to get tarred and feathered, and maybe rightfully so, but i like this idea. maybe it's b/c i loved TG, but i think something like this (IF DONE RIGHT) would be cool. however, if cruise is not part of it, i will not see or support it. they're gonna have a lot of story to develop to help fans know what's gone on in Mav's life since school. what happened to ice man? hollywood? lots of ground to cover, and still make a good "sequel". look forward to more happening i hope.

Since it looks like it might happen Tom and Val need to be in it.

The possibilities are endless for this. They better make it really good if it goes forward. Make it more realistic and more current to the times we are in now. Dont have Maverick die in the beginning and then do an Iron Eagle II. Looking forward to it. What they NEED to do is get those boys together and do Rainbow Six instead!
