Christopher Nolan is eyeing Zack Snyder, Tony Scott, and Matt Reeves to direct the next movie about The Man of Steel
UPDATE: 9/24/10 11:30 AM PST A few of the directors mentioned in the story below have responded, and it seems one of them didn't even know he was on this short list. JoBlo spoke with Matt Reeves, who said he was "surprised" to learn he was being considered to direct Superman:

"I really have no idea if any of that is true. It's certainly an amazing project, but I would be surprised..."

Duncan Jones also tweeted a response this morning that was later removed:

"About Superman... I'm going to say something really cheesy; Can't talk about it, but an honor to be on the list. Interesting times!"

We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further Superman news as soon as we have more information.

Original Story: Producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are hoping to start production on their rebooted Superman movie soon, which is being financed by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. According to Deadline, Christopher Nolan is actively seeking a director to resurrect the Man of Steel, and he has his eye on some mighty big talent.

The five directors currently at the top of Nolan's shortlist include:

Some of these directors are already commited to future projects, which would make them an unlikely choice. Jonathan Liebesman is set to start work on Clash of the Titans 2 soon, and will most likely not get the Superman directing job.

Christopher Nolan is meeting with all of the directors, though, and he will make an announcement sometime in the next few weeks. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are moving fast on the project, as they stand to lose certain rights to the iconic character in 2013 after a judge ruled favorably on behalf of Superman creator Jerry Siegel's heirs.

We will update you with more information as soon as an official statement about Superman is made public.

Man of Steel comes to theaters June 14th, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

Reeves or Jones, would be great, I love "Cloverfield" and "Moon" and after reading positive reviews I'm excited about "Let Me In". Billy Zane as Lex is interesting but Who'd be a good Supes

has anyone seen the trailer for the DCuniverse online game...the whole battle that takes place in the trailer....that is how a superman battle scene should look, structural desctrucion, non stop action, superman using his powers and strength to neutralize his opponents by any means...mayb not killing them on purpose but they die somehow...Check out the trailer and ull most likely agree

Do you remember the rumor a few months ago that Billy Zane was meeting with Nolan susp*ciously, possibly to play Lex in the movie...as hard as it is to say, i think he could make a pretty good Lex Luthor, he already has that smirk, kind of douche bag attitude to him that would fit good with playing Lex...maybe they could add these other qualities as well:

highly Intellegent: vast knowledge of hardware and sofware, weaponry development , great buisness saavy and intimidation and though he has the worlds best scientist working for him, hes still smarter then all them combined, but uses his intellegence for evil

Self Centered: only gives a damn bout himself, putting other in harms way to save himself, the only thing besides himself that he cares bout the most...taking down Superman

A Sleazebag : since hes rich, powerfull and has charisma, i pictured a scene of showing Lex waking up in the morning with like 3 or 4 women with him in bed, though he sweet talks them at first, he then has security kick them out in nuthin but bed sheets and pillows and sarcastically tells them " Have a nice day ladies " lol

...basically hell be the flip side of Tony Stark, but using wat he has as a villian

I still say Matt Reeves or Duncan Jones, but on further reflection, any of the selected directors could work. Snyder would certainly make a visually stunning film - dark, but with the spirit of Superman still intact. The man knows his comics.

    @TheNarrator I agree on u with J.J. Abrams
But i disagree about 300. Horrible movie. Watchmen and dawn of the dead were good though. I just think that the first time is the charm and Duncan Jones achieved that

  11. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Dave, when I say open your mind, I mean you should think beyond what you've seen. That's why Nolan was hired to helm the Batman reboot; the studio saw he could bring something extremely original to the franchise. I am more than sure Snyder would be carefully mentored by Nolan, and that they would find a near perfect balance from both creative minds. After all, if you're such a fan of Nolan, and he nominated Snyder, wouldn't that say something about what he thinks of the guy?

Also, I loved Moon. Again, you continue to miss the main point of my comments. I am saying that Nolan will choose whoever is best for the job, not the guy that closely resembles him. Why else would he nominate such a wide spectrum of directors? He wants to see who would bring something original to the table, as well as serve the fans and the mythos justice. Snyder, has proven several times that he can adapt material, and he is a huge comic book fan. Out of the list, he would know more about Kal-El and Krypton of the bat than any of the other nominees (Matt reeves would be runner up). Also, he has experience with big film pictures. Not saying that's necessary or anything, but it does help.

Overall, I think Snyder deserves more credit than you give him. Opinion or not, he has done a great job of adapting 300 and did the best he could with Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead (reboot). Personally, I would love it if Jones got it. He's a fantastic director, as seen in Moon, and I wonder what he would bring to the franchise. Either way I am happy.

My first choice for director was actually J.J.Abrams, being a comic book reader, as well as a visionary in his own right. Star Trek had perfect pacing and delivered enough "origin" essence for those unfamiliar with it, but didn't weigh down the long time fans with recycled information. That approach would be perfect for this soon-to-be fresh series.

@TheNarrator I do open my mind and you think Nolan would choose Snyder? His work is mind twisting or anything. I'm not saying i know him wdf. I'm saying Nolan is looking for someone who will do what he had planned. I think Duncan Jones should take this. For all I know Duncan Jone's work "moon" was like a work of Nolan's. Zack Snyder is nothing. His work is not that great. Watchmen was good but that was it. Moon got so much praise and this was Duncan Jone's first time making a feature length film

@Insert, yeah, it sounded better when I was typing it. :P Point is, you get the man best suited for the job, not the best guy period. Nolan seems practical enough to understand that. But whether he chooses Snyder or Jones, I just can't wait to see The Man of Steel on screen again.

@REAL, totally noticed that too. However, I mentioned him in my film class the other day, and several people still didn't recognize the name. And this is film class! :P

Someone said something about Singer doing a great job,, ect... Now his visuals was good. But the story sucked. It was over 15 years since superman had been on the big screen. It was less for Batman, and the reboot was the better idea for that line, and would have been for superman. The going to space for years and then comming back, Lois having his child,, all was from no where. That is why it tanked. Singer did a good job with the script he had, but he lead with the script so it is still on him.

I truly would not be surprised if Warner Brothers would be willing to delay production until late 2011 early 2012 if they could get Christopher Nolan to direct. Nolan only does one movie at a time and by then he would be done filming Batman 3. This could all be a cover up to hide the real truth. Just a theory.

  23. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Daveactor, open up your mind bro. With Nolan supervising, do you really think that he would let Snyder screw up Superman with extreme use of slow-mo and over usage of cgi? I doubt it. And you talk like you actually know Nolan, claiming he wants this instead of that? Personally, I think he just wants the man best suited for the job. You can be the worlds best lawyer, but if you can't fix your sink, what good are you? So instead you call a plumber. I think Zack Snyder is Superman's plumber... which sounds really dumb, but whatever. :P Peace man.
