UPDATE: 5/1/10 1:20 PM PSTDeadline New York has updated their original story and are now reporting that Matthew Vaughn will not be directing X-Men: First Class.

The site now reports the studio has a list of directors that include Timur Bekmambetov, Louis Leterrier, David Slade, Daniel Espinosa and Carl Rinsch. It was also said that the studio would make a decision on the director next week, to gear up for a summer start date on the film. We'll be sure to keep you posted on these X-Men: First Class developments as soon as more information comes in.

Original Story: We reported a month ago that director Bryan Singer was not going to be directing an upcoming superhero film and now it seems that Fox has zeroed in on their top candidate to replace Singer. Deadline New York is reporting that Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn is the leading studio choice to direct X-Men: First Class.

The site reports that negotiations have been going on all week and it seems that Vaughn beat out other directors such as Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash), Rupert Sanders (The Low Dweller) and Jonathan Mostow (Surrogates).

Interestingly enough, Vaughn was set to direct Fox's X-Men: The Last Stand before leaving the project. We'll be sure to keep you posted on any new developments on X-Men: First Class as soon as we have more information.

X-Men: First Class was released June 3rd, 2011 and stars James McAvoy, Laurence Belcher, Michael Fassbender, Bill Milner, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, Beth Goddard. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Kick Ass was awesome... I wonder why he's suddenly NOT directing the X-Men: First Class?

LOL @metalheadfury. This is the guy who directed Layer Cake. I'm pretty sure he knows how to make a movie without humor.

Kick Ass was a comedy! And I agree @Anderryan: Kick Ass was exceptionally awesome. Went again on Friday.

@Metalsfury: Just because Kick-Ass was humorous doesn't mean his X-Men would be. Kick-Ass was based on source material that was humorous and I'm sure he'd have payed attention to the apporpriate source material for an X-film. In the end, Last Stand and Origins sucked, Kick-Ass was fantastic. There's really no getting around that.

Carl Rinsch is the guy who directed the short film "The Gift." Sucks that Vaughn's not directing, but based on his short, I'd trust that guy with an X-Men movie.

NOT FIRST CLASS AFTER ALL- The Kick-Ass director could've possibly direct it, I'm just saying that I wasn't impress with the Kiss-Ass idea... Too much humor can deprive depth! Though The Last Stand and Origins could have developed the characters more, I see the direction those films were heading. Not enough giggles, I know! I still like this type of action more than the kiddo stuff, my opinion.. So Matthew Vaughn is irrelevant at this point! I doubt this to be a 2010 release... development needs to be done the right way!

Disappointment. I prefer Vaughn over any of that list, although David Slade could be an interesting choice.

I suppose now that everyone has seen Christopher Nolan helm TDK, it's kind of made producers think that all people from Europe are good. Now, i'm not from america myself. But still, i do think that they should give their own people a chance. I mean Favreu and Singer have done very outstanding jobs.

I think they factor in the talent over the nationality of the director @m_man360. As Kick-Ass (and IMO, Stardust) proved, Vaughn knows his role behind the camera quite well. A little bummed that his involvement was just a rumor. ;(

Vaughn isn't right for this. How come all of a sudden, hollywood want to hire european's?

Not sure if I like this, I know Singer is producing both projects now.

Crap. There goes my hopeful thinking.

Anyways, Timur should do it. That would be a pretty sick movie.

I'll admit that I thought kick-ass was gonna be sh*t but I actually liked so did my brothers I'm already looking forward to it on blu Ray. But anyways I would like to see him direct this movie and I'm pretty sure it'll be better than last stand.

  23. the Narrator

@Metalsfury... depth? Kick Ass was pretty deep. UNLIKE Origins and The Last Stand which we're both full of action and little else.

  26. Metalsfury

PREQUEL BETTER BE FIRST CLASS- I hope this movie is good, the trilogy and origins were excellent. Remember that humor is way below the action. In other words, keep some humor but more importantly the actions got to be serious, this is NOT Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, this is a great franchise based on comics with depth, story and iconic figures. Better be good and we'll take our seats when it hits theaters to find out. Where's Xavier and his machine?

Everything Vaughn has directed has been terrific and this sounds right up his alley. Imagine how awesome X-Men: The Last Stand would've been with him directing! As Lou Brown said in Major League, "Get me Vaughn!"
