UPDATE: 6/10/10 10:30 PSTThe Wrap is now reporting that representatives of Joseph Gordon-Levitt have denied the rumor that the actor will appear in the film. We'll be sure to keep you posted if any new information comes forward.

Original Story:Hollywood Life reports that while working on the film Inception with director Christopher Nolan, Joseph Gordon-Levitt mentioned that he'd love to audition for The Riddler in Batman 3.

Apparently, this sort of talk continued and the site now says that Levitt is being considered by Nolan for the part.

"Chris really dug Joseph [as an actor]," a source close to the director stated. "There was a joke at first between them [on the set of Inception] that Joseph wanted to read for Batman 3 and things heated up as filming continued."

This unnamed source then went on to say:

"It's not 100% confirmed that he's getting [the role of The Riddler] but there's certainly talk about it. Joseph is definitely on the short list."

David S. Goyer is presently hard at work writing the screenplay for the next installment in the Batman saga.

The Dark Knight Rises was released July 20th, 2012 and stars Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Liam Neeson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Morgan Freeman. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Johnny Depp? Seriously ? C'mon I hope I'm not the only one that doesn't want to see Jack Sparrow in a Riddler costume.

@Jokers_Wild_X, Marion Cotillard as Talia would be excellent. As for Selina Kyle, I'm interested to see who Nolan would pick for the role. I think Morena Baccarin from Firefly and V would make a great Selina.

@Cyn: I have faith that Nolan would not cast Jolie as Catwoman just because he's not the type to cast people for their previous fame.
Now Marion Cotillard would be a good choice for Catowoman, or even Talia Al Guhl! (For those who don't know she was Mal, in Inception)

I dont know enough about the Batman comics to indulge an opinion about other Batman villains. If they go with the Riddler, I'd LOVE to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt play him. This guy is awesome and I'm so happy watching his career going strong. He seemed to disappear a bit after 3rd Rock.

Not that interested in seeing the Penguin or Catwoman (if only because they'd probably hire Angelina Jolie and I'm getting a little tired of seeing her simpering on the screen with her questionable acting skills - yeah yeah she has an Oscar. Big Deal).

Guess I'll have to do some Batman-googling and see what other villains there are...has Nolan actually made any mention of using The Riddler, or is this just an assumption on part of Batman-movie-watchers?

that what i mean about Harley's Character, maybe even a break out scene for the end and i wouldn't really see it to be superfluous but intriguing because it has not been done before, so why not, and i think Talia has possibilities revenge something that Bruce could relate to with a simular emotional loss such as a parent and knowing he chose not to save her father ways heavenly on him, and Nolan said it himself after this he is done with the series i wouldn't mind seeing the Harley Character come into play simple because some other hack director is gonna take a shot at the series and lets face it they don't have the foresight Nolan does so their gonna need some good material to work with because they cannot come up with original material like Nolan does or even begin to satisfy the fans because nolan has given up a real version of the character we all have grown to love and expect from now on from the franchise and we are simply not gonna get it when some takes over the series

Bringing in Talia would just be redundant, since Batman begins started with Ra's Al Guhl supposedly dying, then bringing him babck at the end, bringing in another Al Guhl would just repeat that again.
And Like i said, Bringing in Harley Quinn would just be redundant of TDK, where a mad clown-based psycho would go around creating chaos. Harley's involvement should only be a small cameo with the Joker in Arkham at one scene at best.

i totally agree with you about The Dark Knight being amazing Jokers_Wild_X, i could one villain working i could but how about Talia Algul getting close to Bruce only to set him up, or even Harley Quinn character coming in, i do agree their is alot of villains out their to work with, personally i would love to see Harley come into the film's

@Remy, I just think that another villain other than riddler can be used. We've seen him done before, and yes, he's very popular, but I want to see characters not used before, like Begins had Scarecrow and Ra's, two villains never used before. Meanwhile there's a whole pantheon of cool villains he could use to battle Batman.

The only reason I feel that Hush should be part of a one villain movie is because it's Hush, one of batman's coolest villains. Both an emotional, a mental, and a physical counterpart to Batman. As well as the fact that his backstory is enough for an entire movie to work on.

There are times where one villain movies work. Look at Spider-man 1 and 2, great films with one villain and enough to work with for that.
or Batman from 1989, just the joker as the villain.
Or even TDK, where Two-face couldn't even be considered until the last half hour, but the time he wasn't up until, TDK was still amazing.

Personally @Jokers_Wild_X i am a big fan of Thomas Jane and i wouldn't mind seeing Hush brought in, i really didn't know the character at all sadly but after looking it up and seeing Gotham knights i have to say i would really love to see that character and Thomas Jane to play him, i think he is a incredible actor who unfortionally is not being taking seriously, when it comes to the riddler i just want Nolan to pull out all the stops like he has in the last two films, in both installments of batman nolan has always had two villains so i just thought it would be cool to keep his little tradition going, If you have noticed one test his psychically and the other mentally, i think with hush it would be both but lets not devote one film to one villain, yeah the other batman movies kinda screwed it up having one to many but i don't see Nolan doing that

    Ra's Algul- Psychically
    Scare Crow - Mentally

The Joker Both Mentally and Psychically
2 Face - not a hole lot on the psychical part but emotionally as well

  13. Jokers_Wild_X

@Remy: Though Honestly I'd rather not see the Riddler just for the fact that it would be repeating TDK. I'd like something different each movie. Begins was an origin story, coupled with the threats of Scarecrow and Ra's, TDK was the beginning of Batman facing crime of a new caliber, a mad man, and had to decide whether or not killing was the way to turn. The third and (hopefully last) movie should be a new challenge, after having a taste of what madness he's ensued (i.e Joker), he should have Hush as the villain (like I said Thomas Jane in the role), and actually be a force to oppose. Not debating whether or not to kill him, but someone to take on in a fight. Which is perfect for Hush.

if one day they decided to take on Harley Quinn, there is one actress that might do the character justice.
She was on Two and a Half Men, I'm talking about Alan's second wife.
She looks like her, make her face up she would be a dead ringer for Harley Quinn.

i agree with @moviesRme we all have this amazing performance from Heath Ledger, and the way we see the joker, i think it would be difficult for any actor to try and fill those shoes, even impossible i dare say, like i said before i think the joker should be a heard about character and if some screen time comes in just show him in his cell from the waist down, sitting down talking to Harley Quinn for therapy, for the idea of the riddler i have to disagree with you @Jokers_Wild_X i have no doubt in my mind Nolan could take the p*ssy riddler as you say and turn him into a vicious bad ass setting up traps and torture devices

He does look like him (Ledger) but that does not mean he would do as good in the acting as Ledger did. That performance as Joker was WOW!!!; and it would be hard to duplicate, and even come close to what Ledger did. I don't think anyone can do it to that scale. If anything it wold be best to use a different villan all together.

And not to be a major quadruple poster (and sorry for all this, my ADD keeps me from being focused on one thing at a time so I have to do this in multiple posts) but does anyone else think that Thomas Jane would be a great candidate for Hush? Like, think if he took the Punisher role he played and done it as Batman?

Also why does no one realize that the Riddler would SUCK in these batman films?
Source material proves that the Riddler is a major p*ssy when it comes to actually facing the batman. He was a sniffling coward who's only a man when hidden behind a wall with his riddles, mostly because of his fathers abuse as a child.
Think of him as a spammer or a troll on these threads. Talk big behind a computer, but face to face? Total puss bag.

@Thomas Proffitt: Just stop talking...please, you'll sound less stupid.
    1) It's KILLER CROC, not Gator,
and 2) Bane is way more important than you think. Lemme guess, your only knowledge of batman is from the movies and the newer tv show? correct? Because Bane is a calculating genius mob boss who deduced Batman's secret identity with ease, as well as became his ally and an anti-hero at one point. He's not a corny minor bad guy.
and 3) Mad Hatter would be an interesting take but he'd be exactly like the riddler with the turn out. The two are very similar with their mind sets, only Riddler is more popular, and they have different motif's so you fail.

  23. Jokers_Wild_X

@The Fallen: I agree wth you completely, but I'd be more the type to be tired of seeing the same villain type twice in a row for the movie. What I'd like to see is Hush, Batman's one equal counterpart, the villains own batman. Not just logical and calculating, but some guy who's in the same position as Batman just on the opposite side of the law. In the comics they were practically parallel in every way and that's why Hush would be the idea Batman 3 villain.

even though the riddler is the obvious choice, with the way nolan writes and directs a film i have faith in anything and everything he does when it comes to developing his characters and his story, he could add a darker edge to the character something we haven't seen before, IN NOLAN I TRUST LoL

  25. the Narrator

@Insert, Nolan even admitted that when writing the script, he borrowed aspects of the Riddler and placed them within his Joker. And if he wasn't nearly always a step ahead in TDK, then we may have watched a different movie. It seems to me like he had planned nearly everything all along, just not everything went according to that plan. Did he at the beginning of the movie plan out what would happen and how he'd change? No. But he was always a step ahead. That's good enough. Still, he nearly won in the end, with Dent going bad. So if you ask me, he pretty much almost had Bats in checkmate.

And I know The Riddler is the logical choice, but there are other logical choices. The average movie goer is getting tired of the villain always just being ahead of the hero. They'd find some form of recycling in this villain. Nolan has an opportunity to yet again go a different way than what is expected, and I'm betting he does. If not, and he chooses The Riddler, it will still be a great film. But he can do better than simply settling for "logical".

It's interesting that WB confirmed Joker as the "TDK" villain in late July 2006, and now, almost two years before the release of #3, they probably won't tell us who the villain is, for with the slated release date, and the 5 months of production that "TDK" had, then I'm sure that #3 will begin pre-production within a couple months after "Inception" is relased, and then maybe we'll get a confirmation. And if anyone's sly enough, pics from the set by May or July 2011 as we had the first images of Joker in July 2007.

did anyone give any thought to having a totally different villian other than the riddler who in my opinion isnt even a major bad guy, more like a nusiance than any major threat...i'm thinking more along the lines Gator or Bane who's being control by the Mad Hatter; thats just me because everyone has already confirmed the corny guys. blah blah blah.

DDL would be epic. You know he would put the max effort into it. Ive heard him say he needs like 2 years to fully immerse himself into a character before filming even begins. I just dont know if he'd be up for it. I just have this vision of Riddler being behind a mic or keyboard for a chunk of the film.
