Steven Spielberg and George Lucas
It was also reported by the site that they're sources indicate the new trilogy will not be directed by George Lucas, although he will still produce, and that heavyweight directors Steven Speilberg and Frances Ford Coppola could be in consideration to direct these new films.
The site is also saying that these films moving forward is heavily dependent on the success (or failure) of James Cameron's 3D epic Avatar, which is set for a December 18 release. It was also reported that work is under way on converting the original trilogy - Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi - to stereoscopic 3D as well.
Of course, none of this has been confirmed by anybody as of yet, so we'll be sure to keep you posted on any and all breaking developments surrounding a new trilogy.
UPDATE: (10/22/09 11:20 AM PST)Ain't It Cool News reached out to the LucasFilm PR department on the rumor, who replied:
We do not have any Star Wars theatrical movies planned.
The site also did note, however, that the company had denied rumors that turned out to be true in the past, but that probably isn't the case here. We'll be sure to keep you posted if more developments arise from this story.
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was released May 25th, 1977 and stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew. The film is directed by George Lucas.
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back was released May 21st, 1980 and stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker. The film is directed by Irvin Kershner.

Star Wars Original Trilogy was actually at current time while the Prequel Trilogy is set at the past of the original if a new trilogy was created will it be a sequel to the original or a reboot or a interquel (happens between a prequel and a sequel) if its a interquel then would change the title of the Original Episode VII VIII IX?

This is hilarious: fans have been whining about the prequels for over 10 years now, but then beg Lucas to make more!

They have so much material out there in novels, they could easily do trilogies until they barf lightsabers
I am so pissed off they turned darth vader into a snivlling little bitch, they need to make a super bad trilogy

Just make more Lucas. All us fans want more, make us happy! Why discontinue a great saga? There is so much more story to tell. Please make them!!!

Lmao. Avian. Numbers don't mean anything...at least not when it comes to weather a movies good or not good. Cartoon Network is mostly watched by kids. That show is uber corny, cheesy, which makes it perfect for kids and fanboys. Ask any respectable person here...
Now the old Clone Wars...that was more than entertaining.

Personally I like the new Clone Wars, but I want to see new characters and what ever happened to the live action TV series.
Sure Lucas is a fool, but he's an awesome fool who knows how to make money.
Have any of you ever made an excellent sci-fi film that got spot lighted. Sure he's a one picture hack that thinks he's the greatest director ever lived.
All of us knows he's not, all George wants is money. He's done several horrible films over the years, then he realized that his fan favorite needed to be expanded. He says one thing but means another, he's a brilliant *sshole.

Lucas is only fooling himself!
We'll see more movies in a few years.
Remember that story that said, that ILM effect artists signed a gag order, not to speak about the effects from the next movies. If there were no more movies, then why would they have to sign a gag order?

I actually agree with you there Todd, there is a lot. i want the stuff that happened Prior to the original and prequel trilogy to be transceded to film.
The Old Age, Golden Age etc, Old Republic, Darth Thrawn i think his name is and of Darth Bane.
There are so many comics and books in the star wars legacy that would be amazing on film.
include the KOTOR in there and of course a Fett film

I've read some of the comics over the years and I can say there is a lot of ground to cover. I bet there is more than enough material for ten films.

Damn, I was really hoping to see a KOTOR trilogy, and I agree with incmob, it would have to be dark, and politics would be nice. And for everyone, there is no such thing as bad star wars. Even the new animated clone wars series is great.

In my honest opinion i feel that it would be much more suited to make a new trilogy based on Knights of the old republic. not necessarily the game, but that period, see how the sith fall, and how the they tore apart from the jedi. Of course i would love to see lucas produce, but not direct, or even write them. it would have to have more politics, but be a much more darker trilogy. Not sure if it would be entirely profitable, but would definately bring in some cash for the studios.

TCW is not gay. Saying so makes you look stupid. I'm sorry, but it truly does.
TCW is the highest rated Cartoon Network show at the moment, and one of the highest rated Cartoon Network shows of all time (this is including Adult Swim).

The Narrator: The Better Man
I think everyone here is getting The Clone Wars cartoon, and the Clone Wars animated series confused. The newer, animated series is gay. Sorry. But the Clone Wars cartoon limited series which was before/during Episode 3's arrival. Now that was the most bad ass cartoon network show I have EVER seen. I mean from the creator of Samurai Jack, that show was probably my favorite ever cartoons, next to Akira.
If a direcotr came and went with the flow of that series but with, say Knights of the Old Republic, then the series would not only be saved but it would blossom like never before. But since this has been denied, I guess all we can do is hope for a change after Lucas dies.

Happyjack, all star wars is good, yes even the prequels and the show. It's all good!
Todd89, I think Peter Jackson would be cool to direct one of these, or Del Toro and Bryan Singer.
I keep pushing Del Toro because he would bring back the aliens from the original, that weren't CGI. I think it could be awesome. I would love more Star Wars, especially if it is KOTOR.

New Star Wars trilogy? Awsom. However, if its anything like all of this Clone Wars and prequel crap that they keep spilling out, then I wont see it. I want the story to continue from VI. Adapt the books if need be. As for the 3d part, I'm still not that impressed with it. It might work or it might not.

AnnoyingFilmCritic
Damn, now this is Cool news! But, as with all speculated new SW trilogy rumors, take it with a grain of salt. I Really hope that this is true, as I believe that Lucas has learned from his mistakes of episodes 1-3 that they lacked the sense of fun & urgent storytelling and pacing of the originals. Also, that handing the director's hat to one of his esteemed director friends with incredible talent like Speilberg or Coppola, would deliver another kick in the pants space fantasia that fans gorge on...I kinda wondered if JJ Abrams' rebooted Star Trek inspired Lucas to go back to the drawing board since that iteration of Trek (and I'm not a Star Trek fan per se)is a perfect blueprint for how a rebooted summer blockbuster can be with its well proportioned elements of storytelling, character development, action, humor & fun.
Let all of us SW diciples bow our collective heads and hope/tap into the Force (tongue in cheek for literal-minded skeptics)that a new, reinvigorated Star Wars trilogy is on the near horizon..."Luke: R2? R2:Bleep, bloop, bleep! Luke: Fire up the power converters!"

I think Star Wars is dead. He f*cked up the prequels, he has f*cked up Indiana Jones & milked kids with a god awful cartoon (film & show). The man is not arsed about making good films anymore, just making money. The original trilogy where some of the greatest films ever made, shame he's more botherd about money.

If anyone but Lucas does it, it should be Steven. He is the best fit for a sci-fi epic like star wars. But I am not a big fan od the 3D animation stuff. It all looks like they are about 20 years away from makeing anything look extremmly good. Like the Finial Fantasy movie. But I may be wrong, but I only know of 2 KOTOR. I know they are in the process of making a third, but still has not been concidered when it will be done..

I agree JRODwzhere, that would make a great movie as well but I think for right now if they continue anything they should move forward with something completely different from the other 6 movies to start a new generation of Star Wars
