"Hank Azaria will be PLAYING Gargamel for the Smurfs film, not just providing a voice. He'll be live action. Perfect casting, can't wait!"
Original Story: The new CGI rendition of an animated classic has found the voice for its villain. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Hank Azaria will provide the voice of Gargamel in The Smurfs
The site also revealed that Jayma Mays (Glee) has signed on to play the live-action wife of Neil Patrick Harris' character, who is also pregnant. Sony Pictures wouldn't confirm Mays' involvement, though.
Azaria joins a voice cast that includes George Lopez, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Jonathan Winters and Neil Patrick Harris as a live-action character. The story confirms Perry's involvement as Smurfette, who was only in talks for the role when our last story ran. Winters will play Papa Smurf and Cumming will voice Gutsy Smurf.
Raja Gosnell is directing the film and it was said the film would be set in New York City's Central Park. Production is slated to begin next month. A release date is currently set for August 3, 2011.
The Smurfs was released July 29th, 2011 and stars Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, SofĂa Vergara, Tim Gunn, Madison McKinley, Meg Phillips, Julie Chang. The film is directed by Raja Gosnell.

Azaria's a great pick, but I agree with Josh that the script better be good, or the movie will tank. I have some concerns already. Setting the movie in Central Park seems like a bad idea. It seems stupid to me to make this change in the story. A huge part of the story is Gargamel's never ending quest to find the Smurf village. Even though Central Park is large, there's no way he wouldn't find it. He would have parameters to work within. I don't understand why they have to modernize this- it's the goddamned Smurfs.

azaria is a brilliant choice for Gargamel. NPH is also great. my question is - how are so many characters gonna be live-action? are they basing this in NYC? or in the land-o-smurfs (forget the name) with the castle, wanna-be knight kid, and other elements? if they go make this a present world/present day story i'm afraid it's gonna bomb.

Josh
Well, he's a good choice, for sure. I don't know if any amount of good choices will save this movie if the script is terrible, though.

Err
in a live action/ cgi hybrid movie, why would the one human character in the known story be cgi?
