Universal to Reboot Firestarter

Firestarter getting a reboot
Firestarter getting a reboot
Universal and Dino De Laurentiis Co. are teaming up to reboot the 1984 horror Firestarter (starring a young Drew Barrymore), with Mark L. Smith set to pen the script.

According to Variety, the studio aims to turn the reboot into a franchise property.

Based on the Stephen King novel, the story centers on a girl able to start fires at will.

The plot details for the reboot are being kept under wraps, but it is to be loosely based on the original Stephen King book, however, the main character is to be reinvented with a little more edge.

"We see this as a unique, character-driven thriller with a supernatural edge, based on a timeless concept and enhanced by recent visual effects advances," Martha De Laurentiis said.

Mark L. Smith is now working on the Firestarter script.

Universal hopes to get the pic into production next year, but has yet to take the project out to directors.

Anyways I never seen Firestarter lol is it any good? I remeber seeing the art-cover, but never watched it. So i dunno if a reboot is needed or not. I think when a movie deals with lazor fireball or superman powers coming out of their eyes.. it doesnt intrest me. I mean unless they plot the story good then maybe.

If/or when chucky gets rebooted, they HAVE TO get the story right. It has to end perfect.. like leave it opened for a part2 but not the cheesy way. like "freddy vs jason" did. chucky himself HAS TO stay the same doll/color/looks/feel. He cant b reinvented to something diff. that will take the feeling out of it. But best of all.. this has to b a horror. like the guy said.. disturbing. and the damn thing better stay R-RATED. ...disturbing means KEEP UR KIDS AT HOME. lol If they end up making it a pg13 horror. that will stink.

yea i read something like that months back. i really dont care if chucky is re-booted. as long as its not reinvented. However...I see a few strings wrong here..In the org chucky, didnt he die? Its been awhile since i seen it. but didnt he get burn? Anyways my point is Theres no way chucky 2/3/4 and all those could have happened if chucky died in the 1st film. But maybe i missed something along the way? If we get another child's play movie (reboot) or not. chucky cant die the way that he did/does. They cant keep going back to the fatory and chucky comes back to life. so sumthing here is wrong.

Heres Q@A interview Screen Junkies had with Don Mancini, he creator of the Childs Play franchise, back in Oct. and how hed like the re-boot to go now...

There's obviously room to continue this series of Chucky films, but is reboot the only way you're thinking of going at this point?
"I'm personally open to other things but I think that's what the studio wants, because this movie didn't do very well so I think the feeling is that Chucky's viability, his future is in the more straightforward horror vein. I was talking about the rights issues before, I don't think it's necessarily what we'll end up doing as a strict remake. I think we'll reboot it in the sense that it will just be more conventionally scary and it will only be Chucky and we won't have Tiffany and Glen, but it won't necessarily be a strict remake."

Will you be able to use some of those original ideas you had for Child's Play?
"It's one of the things we're talking about. I can't say too much about it but one of the things we're alluding to, it's one of the things that we're talking about. I would like that, the psychological aspect of it. You seem to remember it very well."

Losing the voodoo, using the kid's blood to bring the doll to life...
"We'd definitely keep the mythology of Charles Lee Ray, the idea of Chucky being possessed by a killer rather than what you're referring to, that Chucky was the embodiment of this boy's id."

In the 22 years since Child's Play, have you had new ideas for how an origin of Chucky could be?
"Yes. We've explored a number of different possible scenarios. I'm definitely pushing to go in a very disturbing direction because I feel like if we're going to go back to it being a horror movie, let's make it really disturbing."

Are you planning to direct as well?
"Yeah, I mean, I hope so. That's what we're talking about."

Would we still recognize the Good Guys doll or would you reinvent that too?
"Oh yes, I think we would do a slight redesign on him but not so much that you wouldn't. He's got to be recognizably Chucky. I think we'll take the scars away."

Would Brad Dourif still be the voice?
"If I have anything to say about it, and David [Kirschner] and Corey [Sienega] too."

the It made me fear clowns. Chucky was cool, but didn't scare me.
There is no need to remake it unless Drew wants to be the mother, then I'll see it.

    Lol @Skywise.

Well, I must say that this is also something that is unnecessary, but actually has potential. I'll wait and see; its not that big of a deal. If we're gonna whine about every movie that ever gets remade, rebooted, or adapted, then we'll be out of movies for a while. Lol.

Remakes? No. Reboots? Not preferable, but at least they go in a different direction and often times they pay off. Adaptions? Depending on the source material, and the adapters, it could be fantastic or utter sh*t. sequels? Usually unnecessary, but again, sometimes they make excellent films as well. Overall, these categories make about 65 to 75% of our annual films (my guesstimate). They're all making money, so some people must not mind too much.

You bring up a good point, @JasonKat. I remember seeing plenty of rated R movies in the theaters when I was kid, all I had to do was ask dad, and he'd take me. The studios knew this, and put out what people wanted to see. I hate that that thinking has changed. The good ol' days...

The thing about today's films is that directors and movie makers throw out pg13 horror movies and such just to fill the seats. But the bottom line is.. if ur gonna make a horror movie, it has to b scary, rated r, unrated or nc17. i dont give a crap about lil kids, or underage teens, if u wanna go.. ur dad will take u, other wise wait for it on dvd. But the way movies r made these days. it just blows compared to wat we got in the 80s which were WAY better even the fact that most of them looked fake or had really bad cgi THEY still looked scary. 1 of my favs was...poltergeist, omg wat a true classic, these movies rule.

  21. JasonKat

dude i agree with you there. chucky (part1) was the best 1 out of the bunch that were made. Then sum1 turned it into a comedy lameass story.. I dont want part1 rebooted but if its a must then thats fine as long as they keep it a horror, no comedy. and no other doll other than chucky. As for the rest . i wanna c them remade too. not to mention the birds, cujo. and all those 80s classics even the 1s that were made in the 60s 70s can b made too if they got the right director for the job. i love horror movies and by that i mean scary not CGI scary. The boogieman needs a reboot too w/out the damn twist confusing story. and no cgi, not even 3D psh. lol

@JasonKat... i heard the original creators and director of Childs Play have been wanting to reboot and go back to making it a horror film, but the studio are sitting on there hands about it.....

Id love to see It be remade, make it a good horror movie as much as the tv mini series and more, even get back Tim Curry to play Pennywise if they have to

...We need more great horror movies, not wattered down like sum these days so they dont scare the kids, thats the point of a horror movie, to scare the crap out of people so they cant sleep at night... i had that problem with Chucky when i was a kid, ill admit lol
