It seems that Universal Pictures is bringing a long-running hit play to the silver screen. Deadline New York is reporting that Universal Pictures is in early preperations for an adaptation of the musical Wicked.

The site also reports that high-caliber directors such as J.J. Abrams, James Mangold, Rob Marshall and Glee creator Ryan Murphy have either met with the studio or are being considered to direct the film.

The play's producer Marc Platt, writer Winnie Holzman and songwriter Stephen Schwartz are all developing the film at Universal. It was said that the idea was first crafted to be a feature film before turning to the stage.

Lets see, so far there is going to be a film about the Wizard about how he got to oz, this book and maybe two more. Lets think this through a moment, why can't they all team up and enlist all these films under one studio.
Tin Man was great and modern.
Sounds more of a reboot to the WOZ.
Ron Howard, hell no stay a way from this buddy. If he wants to return to a fantasy film then make Willow 2.

be interesting if this will be a musical or serious film, and if successful it might give them ideas to re-boot wizard of oz?

@jasonbourne49. I'm afraid so. He and Akiva Goldsman (AKA the writer of such classics as "Batman & Robin" and "I, Robot"). Also, Stephen King himself is producing.

@narrator JJ Abrams said he isn't doing the Dark Tower anymore. Little Ronny "Motherf*cker" Howard is doing it. S H I T.

    Baz Lurhmann.

I read the first book -a good, if at times, slow read- and though I have not seen the musical, I have only heard praise.

Am in the middle of the miniseries Tin Man actually. It's pretty good. Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies as a kid, so naturally I'm excited about this.
