i'm not a gylenhal fan or a video game enthusiast, so i guess im not part of the demographic this movie is directed at.

Coal is a kind of heavy, functional eyeliner worn at won by a lot of people (though primarily nomads) in the middle east. It use to serve the same purpose as face black for football players, and provided extra dust protection. Nowadays, its use is mostly cosmetic, although you can see it on Johnny Depp as Cpt. Jack Sparrow.

@ J.A. Ottley ~*~*~ ...Why is it every time I try and politely and logically explain why some circ*mstances of casting are *not* being racist - I feel like I am being accused of playing the "race card". I stated Jake Gyllenhaal is an exceptional actor, and that there were in fact people in ancient Persia whose physical features probably matched that of his. Therefore there is nothing wrong with the casting, and it ultimately depends on acting skills, director vision, and script writing. Besides, if one looks at old Hollywood (take "The Good Earth" for example) acting skill (and popularity) took precedence over geographical ancestry in many situations. Please, just enjoy a movie for what it is and do not focus so intently on a person not being the "right color".

Honestly, I see more people making accusations of playing the 'race card' on this site than instances when it is actually used.

LOL. How do you wear coal?

Friend showed it to me. An interview on youtube, I think. I just said it wasn't a bad accent, but what do I know. I studied anthropology, not linguistics :p

Diagma, where did you hear his voice? (link please). Gyllenhall should be wearing coal, based on his region and his nature as a traveling prince.

Erm ok i've been wondering what the hell happened to this film.
    I thought it was cancelled.

This film should be good, i mean at least give it a chance, OK so what if Jake doesn't look pure persian, in brief...Who gives a f*ck.
If were choosing to play race cards then your all a bunch of dumb ass morons.
Colour has nothing to do with it, its about talent, if you want examples, plz take your attention to Ben Kingsley (whom also stars as the antagonist in this film) kicked f*cking ass as Ghandi and everyone doubted him.
Eminem proved you don't have to be a colour to rap... Obama showed us that any ethnicity can sit in the White House.

Jeez you guys moan that piccolo ain't green and sh*t.

This film should be good considering its source material...Its being produced by Bruckheimer & Disney and the director aint so bad.

And yes this film does have acrobats and fighting in it, for the people's information, i caught glimpse of a scene while at Pinewood Studios where part of the set was built.

Thank you, Diaigma, you put that much better than I. The Persia/Mesopotamia/Babylon area was a conglomerate of people from different areas and ethnicities - as long as there is some diversity in the cast it will be fine (for those who focus on the "race card").

And @ Henson, way down there - you asked why I didn't like Brokeback Mountain? I felt it went further than necessary to prove a point. A love story is grand, but so much of the movie just felt like pointless (and disturbingly graphic) lust that I did not enjoy it.

  17. Diaigma

Oh geez, the race card again?

Okay, first off, this takes place in MEDIEVAL Persia, in the region of Mesopotamia, which is right above Arabia, next to India, borders with what is now Russia, and to the east is China. Today it is known as Iran. Persia at that time was a conglomeration of all these gene pools, and, get this, royalty was WHITE. Not Anglo-Saxon white, by any means, but much whiter than Indian and Arabic. A tan on a white guy will suffice. Jake doesn't look far off. What gives his true race of origin away is his facial profile. Eyes are too big. I mean, Jake was not my first choice either, but look at who else they have! Molina and Knightly! They totally have the faces for Persian characters.

The only doubt I have in this being a good film is that Disney is involved. They tend to screw everything up. This is your chance at redemption, Disney, which, ironically, is the underlying theme of The Sands of Time. Make us proud!

Oh, and I wasn't going off on anyone in particular. I've just had enough with the "race" issues over The Last Airbender. Didn't want PoP to fall under the same pointless scrutiny. :P

I don't know. I like Prince of Persia Video game. So I hope they don't screw this up. So far the only best film based on a video game is Mortal kombat. Resident Evil was cool but I hate how they change things. As long as Uwe Boll isn't the director I'm cool.

@ Atreus asking if they are doing "the sand of time" trilogy style prince of the new version prince - Considering the movie at which pictures we are commenting on is titled The Prince of Perisa: The Sands of Time. I'm going to go out on a limba nd guess that they are going for the Sands of time trilogy style prince. IDK i could be wrong on that.

On to my comment. I like it, I hope disney doesn't make it suck. I personally think he looks more like the Warrior Within stlye prince than they Sands of Time "little boy" style (based on other pics i've seen). Either way, I'll see if for sure. Crossing fingers on this!

idk he kinda just looks corny. i hope that i am wrong and that by the time a trailer comes out it looks awesome but as of now, it looks kinda lameish.

    3 years agoby @thebdFlag

  28. Atreus

Ok - the pictures look lame, for sure. But I trust Jake Gyllenhaal enough as an actor to pull this off. Even his movies which I have not liked (*cough* Brokeback Mountain *cough*) I have to admit he did a fantastic job in - from Donnie Darko on up. So I have a good feeling he will pull this one off.

I am wondering - are they going more for the character in the "Sands of Time" trilogy, or the more headstrong prince from the newest game. Because... well... I kinda like the new prince more. Still, however they do it, I hope they do it well.

Yeah, and I can see where you are coming from, Henson, but you are not entirely correct. Persians are not necessarily Arabic (or what we perceive as darker skinned middle-easterners) . Some modern Arabs descend from Persia, but a person from historical Persia could be pale in complexion (just like many modern Isrealites are pale, even the ones who are "pureblood".) So it probably would be more accurate if he was a little darker - but it is not rendered *inaccurate* because he isn't.

As long as there is bad-ass acrobatics and fighting, I don't think it will matter anyway.
