Toy Story 3 will compete for Best Picture at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards next weekend, and it seems that we will be seeing more from this animated franchise in theaters this year. Two new Pixar shorts featuring the Toy Story 3 characters will be attached to Cars 2, which hits theaters on June 24, and The Muppets, which debuts November 24.

The first short is entitled Toy Story Hawaiian Vacation and you can read the plot details below.

"Bonnie is off to Hawaii, and Barbie and Ken are excited to go along on their first tropical vacation! But when they're accidentally left behind, it's up to Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the toys to create a Hawaiian paradise right in Bonnie's room."

The story line came from a description of an upcoming children's book Play-cation!, which will be published by Random House on August 9. The book is said to be based off the animated short.

No details were given on the second short, which will debut before The Muppets. We reported back in November that Toy Story 3 will be the final feature-length movie in the franchise, although these new shorts will allow fans to see their favorite Toy Story characters again.

Toy Story 3 was released June 18th, 2010 and stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Don Rickles, Michael Keaton, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger. The film is directed by Lee Unkrich.

Cars 2 was released June 24th, 2011 and stars Larry The Cable Guy, Owen Wilson, Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, Eddie Izzard, John Turturro, Brent Musburger, Joe Mantegna. The film is directed by John Lasseter, Brad Lewis.

The Muppets was released November 23rd, 2011 and stars Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, Donald Glover, Danny Trejo. The film is directed by James Bobin.

I like the idea that life goes on for the Toy Story characters, even after the final film is over. It's nice to get to see them having fun, after all the crazy stuff is over

Yeah it's a shame the main reason for Cars 2 cause of selling merchandise. Right there it brings down the Pixar name. Ain't that the main reason for Star Wars 2nd Trilogy and Clone Wars to sell the damn toys. Producer Rick McCallum said himself in various interviews.

I'd love to see some shorts that take place in Bonnie's imagination. Remember the awesome intro in Toy Story 3? The shorts could be like that only tell an entire story within 5 minutes or so. Pixar just has to try something like that.

It's a ploy to get you to see Cars 2, due to the criticism they're getting :P

I will buy my ticket for Cars 2, watch the short, then leave. And as for the Muppets, that's just extra incentive to see it!

I'd rather shorts than another full-length movie. TS3 ended that perfectly.
