Toy Story 3 reaches the $1 billion mark
Two weeks after becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Disney•Pixar's Toy Story 3 will cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office today, joining Alice in Wonderland as the second $1 billion film this year from The Walt Disney Studios - the first studio in history to accomplish this feat. Disney first crossed the $1 billion threshold with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in 2006. Toy Story 3 becomes the only animated film to reach this milestone and the seventh title in industry history.

"It's been an incredible year as we saw the Pixar team bring Buzz and Woody back to the big screen and watched Tim Burton's vision for Alice in Wonderland take the world by storm," said Rich Ross, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. "These box office triumphs prove that creative storytelling brought to life by imaginative, inspired and talented professionals is something audiences respond to the world over."

As of Thursday (8/26/10), Toy Story 3 tallied more than $592.9 million internationally, Disney's largest international animated release. Latin American audiences have contributed $138 million making Toy Story 3 the highest grossing Disney film ever released in the region. Toy Story 3 is the most successful UK release in Disney history and currently stands as the fourth biggest title in territory history with $102.4 million in box office receipts so far. In Japan, the film has taken in $111.2 million and spent five consecutive weeks as the #1 movie. Toy Story 3 currently ranks as the #7 film in global box office history and domestically ranks #9 with $404.6 million in receipts to date.

Alice in Wonderland began setting records during its opening weekend (March 5-7), becoming the biggest March opening in industry history, the highest 3D opening ever and The Walt Disney Studios' biggest opening for a non-sequel film. Internationally, the film went on to tally more than $690 million, becoming Disney's biggest overseas release of all time and the fourth biggest title ever released overseas. Worldwide, the film took in $1.0243 billion, ranking it as the #5 film in global box office history.

Alice in Wonderland was released March 5th, 2010 and stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen. The film is directed by Tim Burton.

Toy Story 3 was released June 18th, 2010 and stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Don Rickles, Michael Keaton, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger. The film is directed by Lee Unkrich.

Guys, enough. Its not gonna best avatar or titanic. He'll, it won't even surpass Lotr, nor does it deserve to.

As for @dark_env's question, Return of the King is hands down the winner. Beautfiul, dramatic, epic. Near perfect. TDK Is indeed the next runner up, followed by Dead Mans Chest.

Avatar-I don't really expect this film to be the highest-grossing film of all time but it was alright because the critically-screwed Transformers 2 wasn't the ruler despite i really liked the film!,HP6 can be a decent 2009 ruler but for Avatar, I almost think it was very overrated until I saw it and It changed my mind I love the film, the only thing I don't like is it was a 20th C Fox film & its not my favorite film studio but I accept it JC creates revolutionary decent films that even sequels can't reach it and shows original non-sequel or prequel films can be good! I believe JC's films is awesome and successful even though its not a sequel! Come on can you please support his films if you really love it!

I think its time for Sci-Fi and Animated Films to become billionaires!
We have already too many fantasy billionaires like LOTR:ROTK , PotC 2 , Alice & TS3 (avatar is not considered fantasy the ending could be scientifically explained!).
Titanic and The Dark Knight is alright to be billionaires because they are indeed amazing for an ordinary non-fantasy or fiction film!

@Dark enV, in terms of the best movies to reach 1 billion, TDK and LOTR are the best films. As far as which movies deserved to surpass 1 billion, well, they all did. While the quality of each movie ranges from near perfection to mediocre, each movie found enough of a worldwide following to reach an incredible milestone.

What a question, @Dark enV - I'd have to say RotK. Brilliant in every way. The extended version, even better. TDK runs closely behind, then Toy Story 3. The others don't deserve it.

I don't get those who are calling this the best animated film of the year. It was mediocre for a Pixar. My guess is they didn't see How to Train Your Dragon. THAT, my friends, was an incredible surprise. And unless that Owl movie is better, HtTYD deserves the Oscar.

Here's a good question, out of all the films that have made $1 billion, which do you think truly deserved to cross that mark? The 7 films are of course: Avatar, Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Alice in Wonderland, The Dark Knight, Toy Story 3

    What!
Toy Story 3 is indeed an awesome and unforgettable film but I think this success is very too much
compare this to its past film TS1 has approx. $300m while TS2 has approx. $400m & eleven years later TS3 gross $1b this is probably the biggest leap gross of history
2010 is surely the year of Disney , Alice and TS3 are both f*cking billionaires Prince of Persia has $370m,a less success for the hailed new Disney PG13 film,Sorcerer's Apprentice is a surprise flop with only #140m vs its budget of 150m its sad and finally Tron 2010 I predict its gonna be a $600m worldwide than a $700-900m grosser!
