Toshiba Could Profit by Dropping HD DVD

Could Toshiba gain profit by ending the format war? It seems that they already are. According to a story from Forbes, investors responded quite positively to the news that Toshiba is backing out of the high-definition format war.

Toshiba's stock rose 5.9% just from early Monday afternoon trading in Tokyo, while Sony's stock rose just 1.9% on the Tokyo market. Nikko Citigroup analyst Hiroyuki Masuko also said Monday that Toshiba could raise its operating profit by 20% in the next fiscal year if they abort HD DVD. He eve raised his rating on the stock to "buy" from "neutral."

The company still hasn't officially announced HD DVD's demise, but many are expecting it within a few days.

    as you said the ps3 is more powerful on PAPER because the ps3 has the cell processer witch has five cores but they aren't syncronyized and the 360 has three cores but are syncronyized. the ps3's processer is like if you had five people that had to put a jigsaw puzzle together but they have to be in diffrent rooms and each person got a fifth of the puzzle and each of them had to put there fifth of the puzzle together before they could go in the same room and put all there fifths together to make the puzzle complete and the 360 is like if you took three people and sat them at a table and gave them all the pieces so they can put the puzzle together with each other. naturally the ones at the same table would get it done faster. in conclusion it would look better on paper to say we have five people doing the puzzle instead of saying we have three people doing the puzzle.

    It all comes down to a personnal choice. I own a PS3 but I hesistated befor buying it because of games. Bioshock is a perfect example of why I was going towards Xbox360. Even the controller makes a difference in what people choose to buy.

    The PS3 on paper is the most powerful system. You can argue that the XBOX 360 has more games and a large market stranglehold, but the PS3 packs a more potent punch.

    I agree that it's up to the developers to tap into the potential of a game console, but when your hardware is more powerful then you can do more with your software.

    But in your argument you are right. The Wii doesn't have the hardware capabilities to even stand close to what a PS3 or 360 can do yet it's dominating sales since it has the games that the majority of people want to play. I may even get a Wii after their first price drop cause it's great to have at parties (Can't beat Super Smash and Mario Kart), but with it STILL backordered since its launch they don't have to drop the price for some time.

    Boys...boys....it's not the console that makes it great.....it's all in the software.

    They could make an Atari400/5200/2600/7800/MagnavoxOdyssey/MattelIntellivision/ColecoVision/NintendoES/SegaGenisis/Panasonic3DO/SuperNintendo/SegaSaturn/SonyPlaystation/Nintendo64/SegaDreamcast/SonyPS2/MicrosoftXbox/NintendoGameCube/NintendoWii/SonyPS3 console with 999,999,999 conjillian jigga-watts and still it's up to the software developers to make the console owe up to it's performance bosting. Capeesh?

    Each and evertime they make one of those, the machine seems to fizzle out once there are not enough demand for the software...again? Who's resposible to make the consoles great? THE GAMESSSSS...yeah, that's right...the games.

    Forget the fact that you contradicted yourself within the first 2 sentences of your long winded remark. Blu-ray won. If HD-DVD was better I would buy one, it's cheap enough. I mean, if your cheap ass owns one I'm sure anyone can afford it. If HD-DVD won then yes I'd still buy a PS3 because I honestly believe it's a better system, plus I owned a PS1 & PS2 before it. Not only do I have a library of games built up from them I also trust the brand because it has yet to let me down. If you wanna know something hilarious, my HDTV is a Toshiba! OH NO!     Kaya, the reason people like to mock you (hey, myself included) has nothing to do with your retail choices. It's that you somehow like to promote yourself by your choice, like you somehow played a big part in all this. That you buying 1 PS3 somehow made all the difference in the High Def war; and that if HD DVD had all the studio support last year and was winning you'd never have bought the PS3. That's all bull sh*t. You're a Sony fan boy and your choice has nothing to do with Blu Ray being better, or you know anything more than anyone with a computer and the internet. And the reason the jokes directed at you are generally homosexual in nature is because you post photos of yourself that make it look like you couldn't get a girl if you paid for her.     That's great, maybe it can make up for the hundreds of millions it already threw down the drain in this format. People criticized Sony for selling PS3's at a loss. Toshiba did it 10 times worse, losing hundreds with each sale.
