Tom Hanks is eyeing a lead role in Universal's adaptation of Erik Larson's nonfiction best-seller In the Garden of Beasts, which Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman to produce via the duo's Playtone banner.

The book tells the true tale of William Dodd, the United States' reluctant and mild-mannered ambassador to Berlin in 1933, and his daughter Martha, a vivacious socialite who had romantic affairs with a Gestapo official and a Soviet spy. Dodd and his family at first naively navigated life in Nazi Germany (Dodd's daughter was excited when Adolf Hitler kissed her hand) but they slowly gained awareness of the mounting brutality around them.

The book, whose full title is "In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin", was published in May.

By the way, Larson's books are about to make a huge, HUGE impact on the world if all goes as planned.
First, you have The Devil in the White City (which I'm actually reading right now) about the United States's first true serial killer who used the Circa 1893 Chicago World Fair to lure his victims into his specially designed "hotel".......and also follows the key architect who brought the fair to reality. Leonardo DiCaprio wants to produce and star in the film as the serial killer......and if they could just convince either David Fincher, Martin Scorsese or Robert Zemeckis (considering his availability just opened up) to direct, I can guarantee an instant classic is at hand!

Then you have In the Garden of Beasts which *could* potentially start Tom Hanks.....which is another big deal!!! I haven't read this book but plan to in the near future. As long as they can get a good director on board this one, as well.....things will be looking up for Eric Larson's novels! This is another film I wouldn't necessarily mind seeing Zemeckis direct.....although I'd still much rather him go back to Here There Be Monsters!!!
