While we wait for tomorrow's Edge of Tomorrow trailer, Universal Pictures has released two new photos, featuring stars Tom Cruise as Lt. Col. Bill Cage and Emily Blunt as Rita Vrataski. Doug Liman directs this sci-fi thriller with a Groundhog Day twist, centering on Cage, who dies in battle while fighting an alien scourge, only to get caught in a time loop, where he is forced to revisit his death over and over again, sharpening his survival skills each time out with Special Forces comrade Vrataski. Check out these photos, then read on to see what the stars have to say about the story and their characters.
Tom Cruise reveals that the repetitive nature of his demise will provide humor for the audience.
"It's storytelling. You're going to get the audience used to the experience of it. And then you get to have them laugh with it."
Emily Blunt said this project provided her with the chance to do something she's never done on screen before.
"I've discarded the bonnet and corset for an exosuit and a huge sword, it seems. I was looking for something very different from anything I have done before. This was definitely that."
The acctress also talked about her intense training, working out six days a week for three months to get in shape for the role.
"I even learned Krav Maga, a lethal martial arts using pretty much everything including your teeth to destroy. That was pretty fun."
The training paid off, with the actress earning high praise from her co-star Tom Cruise.
"She showed up and that girl was ready to roll, she was so fit. She is a badass and she totally crushes it here."
The actor also talked about his own physical challenges in running while strapped to a 130-pound exosuit, which he actually helped develop himself.
"One of the suits with the angel wings had a sniper rifle and missile launcher on my back and weighed about 130 pounds. I'm having to sprint in it. It's physically grueling."
Edge of Tomorrow will be the actor's second sci-fi movie in a row, following Oblivion, but he said that he hadn't planned on it happening like that.
"Look, I make all different kinds of movies. When Doug (Liman)
came to me and said what the story was and the design, I thought, 'This is going to be cool. It's going to be very different than anything I've done before.'"
Emily Blunt revealed that her experiences on Edge of Tomorrow have made her want to do more action movies, although there is one aspect she is looking to avoid.
"I just don't know if I want to be wearing the exosuit again. I think I'd like to try one metal-free to see what that would be like."
Edge of Tomorrow was released June 6th, 2014 and stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Brendan Gleeson, Bill Paxton, Jonas Armstrong, Tony Way, Kick Gurry, Franz Drameh. The film is directed by Doug Liman.
