Titanic 3D Valentine's Day Sneak Preview Crashes Box Office Servers

Yesterday, 20th Century Fox offered free advance screenings of Titanic, which is returning to theaters with a brand new 3D conversion April 6. Sadly, the sneak previews sold out within hours, which caused several computer servers to crash due to an overwhelming amount of traffic.

The screenings will be held in 50 cities across the country, including Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Boston. The sneak previews will be held exclusively in RealD theaters in each of these cities. Fox is also opening This Means War on Valentine's Day, which is odd since studios don't usually like to create their own competition, even though Titanic's screening is a one night only event.

Back in October, we had a chance to preview 18 minutes of footage from Titanic's new 3D presentation, which looked rather impressive. Director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau have spent the past few years meticulously converting the 1997 2D classic into 3D with the latest and greatest technology at their disposal.

We'll have to wait and see if these free screenings create some positive word of mouth for Titanic before it debuts in 3D April 6.

Titanic was released April 4th, 2012 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, Bill Paxton, Bernard Hill. The film is directed by James Cameron.

    @felipe-11 I actually saw the trailer in 3D once, and it's pretty incredibly. James Cameron has done some pretty remarkable work with the conversion.

    @moviegeek, you lucky SOB. Not that it's playing in my area at the moment, but when it eventually gets here in its wider release, me and the lady friend will be getting ours as well... providing we're still together then... damn, I feel morose today.

    @rise-a-knight Same here!

    I actually want to see it IMAX so I'm not even bummed about this.

    Weird thing is that I've seen the Titanic trailer attached to a bunch of 3D movies already (including IMAX 3D), but the trailer itself is always in 2D, so I guess I'll have to wait for opening day to see what the 3D footage looks like.
