Back in the late 90s, Warner Bros. hired director Tim Burton to make a new Superman movie which was called Superman Lives. Nicolas Cage was attached to star in the reboot, although it never got off the ground. However, there was work done on the project during its stint in development and new images were recently discovered at the Facebook page of visual effects artist Steve Johnson. You can even see the likeness of Nicolas Cage in some of these unique costume molds. Take a look at them below:
to take a look at even more images from Superman Lives.
I remeber reading how Nick Cage was really pushing to get the new Superman movie and it had been something he talked about before Returns. He wanted to do a superhero movie for a while. Ghost Rider was far from perfect but he definatly fits the Johnny Blaze bill better. At least he got to do a superheo movie...well even anti-superhero movie.
glad this never took off. Granted the design and outfits are pretty sick - just not for a superman movie. It looks to alien/foreign. Something I would expect to see in the GL film.
That is from "An evening with Kevin Smith". The first one I believe. There are three and they are worth watching. They average about 4 hours long a piece.
here is another interesting thing i found on youtube, it is a video of a kevin smith lecture of the process of him actually scripting the movie, and it is entertaining and humorous as well as informative of the creative process he was forced into instead of actually being able to make a faithful screenplay.
BTW, just found this link for a concept art on the film, and almost looks like burton may have been going almost a frankenstein approach with superman in the film, check out the last photo, all the others are previous ones that have been seen.
I admit that the execution was poorly conceived with the effects, however, i feel Tim Burton has always tried to be creative with his own reimaginings and besides, the original script is what he was interpreting from. I think from that perspective that it was different, unique and had a very alien quality to it, the effects are not bad at all, in fact steve johnson has done some amazing work in the past, i just think that it was not suited for superman. I thought Burton did well on the first two batmans, and for most fans, there was a cry to get him back prior to nolans films. Cage, on the other hand... i never could see him as supes, and from day one when i heard the casting on that film i cried foul i think that would have been alot more upsetting for me than the effects.
I believe it could have been purely awesome if it was an original superhero concept that 'borrowed' from the supes mythos but that essentially chanelled Tim Burton's dark and freaky characters and world. The suit looks good (IFits clearly not meant to be worn by supes), bring in Burton'S Vision at it's best + good story + great villain and he could have jump-started a great new original franchise here....without any worry of fanboys flaming him.
hahahaa w/out even reading it... i just scrolled down to see the images and i was gonna say.." Is it me or does that 5th pix look like Nicolas Cage. The dummy in a blue suit on a table.." then i realized it was him, he was locked in to this movie, but i swear, i just read "superman" thinking kool. but it never crossed my mind that cage would b in it. .
I like the title. It probably doesn't have a chance of being used for Snyder's film, but they could have called the first film Superman Lives and the second Superman: Man of Steel. Oh, well.
Holy $hit... it looks like Jor-El beat Zeus up and stole his armor from the CotT reboot. That's my last bash for this article. It's a dead concept... Bring on King Nolan's production!
This actually looks like a suit Snyder would use, and I think he'd be able to pull it off nicely with a few modifications. I forget to mention, despite my approval of this suit in its EARLY STAGES, a Tim Burton-directed Superman movie probably wouldn't have worked out that great.
It's funny. Burton was "this" close to bringing his version of Superman to life, and now Nolan has been given that same opportunity in a different way(as producer rather than director). Both presented their versions of Batman, and both were given the opportunity with work their magic on Superman probably based largely on the fact that their Bat-films were successful. I'm glad Nolan's take is getting the green light, though, and Burton's never got off the ground.
I actually don't think that looks bad. It's very alien-like, such as what's being done with the Green Lantern suit, which makes more sense than it being the product of Martha Kent's sewing skills. The suit could have been a gift from Jor-El or something left for him in the Fortress of Solitude. If they threw in a little more yellow and red with the blue to keep with the same iconic colors of Superman, it might have worked. However...Nicolas Cage? No. Just no.

REALLY glad this never happened. Tim Burton, I love you. But you can't do Superman and you CAN'T cast Nicholas Cage AS Superman... WTF!?
