That means pre-production on Thor: The Dark World is well underway, and that the story is set in place. This sequel is said to have a stronger Norse influence, and will have a very 'Viking' centric vibe. Mads Mikkelsen was originally set to play the villain, but recently dropped out. While we don't know who is replacing him just yet, we now have an idea about whom he was set to play.
In an interview with I Review Too that dates back to early June (thanks to Comic Book Movie for digging this up), stuntman James Grogan let it slip that Thor will be going up against the The Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. Which makes sense, considering the new title revealed during Comic-Con 2012.
Here is what he had to say.
"The other day for example, this is quite random but I was working on Thor: The Dark World. I had a load of stunt guys in and the director came in and he said 'Look, we want you all to be elves,' and I was like 'What the hell is an elf anyway?' and he said 'I want you all to walk around like these supernatural animals,' honestly it was the most ridiculous thing ever but you just have to not be self aware and get on with it."
The speculation this morning is that Mads Mikkelsen had been cast to play Malekith The Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves, and a not very friendly guy. This blue, pointed-eared super villain has super human strength and speed, along with the ability to teleport and project energy. And he looks like he would fit right into the overtly Norse universe being hyped up in this sequel. Malekith's biggest storyline in the comics, to date, finds him teaming up with Loki to retrieve the Casket of Ancient Winters, which allows its user to control the icy weather conditions on Niflheim. It also makes its user younger.
Of course, this plotline has not yet been confirmed by the studio. But it is in line with everything we've heard about the project thus far. We'll be sure to update you as the story breaks.
Thor: The Dark World comes to theaters November 8th, 2013 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston. The film is directed by Alan Taylor.

@themoviefanatic That's true, but I guess we will have to wait and see who they actual pick!

@mcleve02 Yeah, i know what you mean :P . Although, if it were to be a character that was completely computer generated like Bill Nighy's role in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies as Davy Jones, then that might actually work if they don't make him look the age that he already is.

@mcleve02 Yeah, Bill Nighy might look too old for the part.

Bane5000
Mads Mikkelsen would be absolutely perfect for the role of Malekith, if not him I say Robert Knepper, he can play a great villian { look him up }.
Heres a wild idea...It been known Hugo Weaving has said he'd be hesitant to return to the role of Red Skull...if one or neither of them can play Malekith, how bout either Mikkelsen or Knepper to take the over the role of Red Skull??? 8-]
