This Means War Loses Ratings Appeal with the MPAA

This Means War's R rating upheld by the MPAA
The Motion Picture Association of America previously handed out an R rating for the 20th Century Fox action-comedy This Means War. As is their right, Fox appealed the decision, although the Appeals Board stuck with the R rating. Here is the statement from the MPAA below.

"The Classification and Rating Appeals Board today upheld the R rating given to the movie This Means War. The Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) had assigned the movie the R rating for "some sexual content." In the appeal brought by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, the Appeals Board heard statements on behalf of This Means War from Ted Gagliano, President, Feature Post Production for Twentieth Century Fox. The Classification and Rating Administration was represented by Chairman Joan Graves."

We reported earlier this month that Fox made the unorthodox move to release This Means War on Tuesday, February 14. Reese Witherspoon stars in This Means War as a woman torn between two men (Tom Hardy and Chris Pine), who both happen to be spies. So much for the kids getting their PG-13 rated Valentine's Day movie.

This Means War was released February 17th, 2012 and stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger, Chelsea Handler, John Paul Ruttan, Abigail Spencer, Angela Bassett. The film is directed by McG.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Yeah, I don't know what everyone's psyched about. It looks... okay. It has a great set of actors, but I just don't see it doing it for me.

While I didn't care much for this flick to begin with, I'm glad it has the balls to be something more than a PG-13 rom-com.

@corey agreed. i'm in whether it's PG-13 or R. this seems like a fun movie. while i'm not an advocate for gratuitous nudity, sex, language, etc. i think an R rating semi separates this flick from other typical RomComs. here's hoping it is as good as the trailer.

Do movies ever win an appeal with the MPAA?

R or PG-13, it doesn't matter to me. Movie looks like boat-loads of fun. If the film ends up R and doesn't make much money it won't matter to me because they aren't planning to gain cash for a sequel.

Either rating, I know I'm gonna have fun with this.

@ROFLitschristian -- Same here. It's going to be one of the most pointless movies of the year. I was going to say one of the worst, but there's a lot of movies that are coming out this year that will make this look actually okay. I also don't know why the hell it's receiving an R-rating. By the trailer, it seems like you're average rom-com - you can especially tell for it's "some sexual content" description.

I thought it would be rated PG-13 based on the previews, but being that it took so long for a rating i only knew it would end up with an R rating...

Keep it rated R.. besides the money they'll cash in it can't hurt right?

The audience is completely geared towards teens. So you can bet Fox will cut down on some of the content to attain that rating to release to a wider demographic, or more specifically, their target audience. I'd be surprised if they don't do that.

Meh, I'm still watching it. MPAA and CARA are strange when it comes to ratings.
