Justin Lin is on the short list of contenders to direct The Wolverine
While the candidates all have a wide variety of backgrounds, all of the directors except for Mark Romanek and Gary Shore have directed an action vehicle before. Earlier today we reported that José Padilha is developing a new project entitled Tri-Border with Gran Torino screenwriter Nick Schenk, although that project is in early stages of development. Justin Lin is also attached to direct Terminator 5, although star Arnold Schwarzenegger recently put a hold on all of his acting projects.
Shortly after director Darren Aronofsky left The Wolverine, 20th Century Fox indicated they were in no rush to find a replacement director. Christopher McQuarrie wrote the screenplay, which takes place in Japan. The location is another potential concern, in the aftermath of the recent earthquakes and tsunamis which have devastated the island country.
It isn't known when 20th Century Fox will make a final decision on The Wolverine director. We'll just have to wait and see.
The Wolverine comes to theaters July 26th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima. The film is directed by James Mangold.

I prefer José Padilha, Doug Liman, Antoine Fuqua or Justin Lin as the director on the list but Lin has lots of works now that he working on the Highlander remake and Terminator 5.
My choices of the directors that are not on the list would be Ridely Scott, James Cameron or John Hyams.
I hope The Wolerine would still be Rated R like when Darren was on board.
The film needs more gore, action, cool fight scenes, a perfect story and good director to make up the mistakes done to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Now that is a reboot, I hope the prequel is done right.

I've seen all their films but they are not as good as Darren. It needs someone that is just as good as he is.

Come on, people! There's not one other first-rate filmmaker out there that's just as creative and brilliant as Aronofsky that you could find?!! For shame!

Don't get me wrong, each has done some decent work, but they can't hold a candle to what Aronofsky could have brought to it.

These are the replacements for Aronofsky? I thought they said that they "won't settle for a second rate director"? I'm honestly now fearing for this movie...

I still say Duncan Jones, but out of this list, I think it would be interesting to see what Romanek or Mangold could do.

no f*ck Justin Lin. yeah he made Fast Five and it was awesome so now he's getting all this attention for it. people seem to be forgetting he made that abortion called Tokyo Drift. just cause he did a good job with Fast Five doesnt make him Stephen Spielberg. id go with Fuqua

@thedude-abides I would agree with you, based on those films, but remember, he also did a crazy big budget action film called KNIGHT AND DAY that, even me being a fan of, that movie was a f*cking mess. I'd say Fuqua. Haven't seen romaneks films, so I can speak on him, as well as jose padhila.

Hhmm...no Aronofsky in this list of potentials... If I had to go with one, though, I'd say James Mangold is the obvious choice. Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line, and 3:10 to Yuma just to name a few. No other candidate on the list has that kind of track record. Little disappointed this is the best they could come up with...

i would definitely pick antoine fuqua. he definitely knows how to make gritty films which is what wolverine needs above all else, GRIT!!!! and he has an amazing eye for detail. justin lin would be good too because hes great at action but between them i would probably pick fuqua because from what ive heard this wolverine is supposed to be much darker and more serious and nearly all of fuquas films have been dark and serious so i think he would be much better for the tone of the film, BUT, justin lin is F*CKING CRAZY at doing action which is also what wolverines gonna be about. so i guess they would both suit the movie well but if it was me i would probably go with fuqua. even though it wont happen it would be crazy if they got BOTH directors to do it together, one supplies the grit and the other supplies the action. now THAT would be some f*cking crazy sh*t. that would be the most perfect team to handle wolverine.

@cheetoboy i dont hate on X3 like most others but i was very disapointed in the direction they took. As i said, the phoenix saga spanned multiple universes in which she cold heartedly killed millions of aliens...maybe billions and she LOVED it. However n the X3 she basically just stood in the back ground and did nothing. The Phoenix saga was very emotional for her and for her friends and she eventually commited suicide. Now that is rather dark. They completly failed to to hit on that.

@skywise I am completely with you on that. Even after seeing fast five (which suprisingly i loved), and thinking Lin CAN totally pull off a terminator film, it is only on the basis that fast five incorporated things that are trademarks of the terminator films... had they thrown in arnold in a few scenes you might have thought you were watching terminator instead. But he is good... amping up the action, having the subtle humor... but not wolverine. Not the direction they are taking the franchise. I would also agree on Fuqua, however i have only seen three of his movies to date, and can only say i liked two of them, the one not liking included action, which wolverine will undoubtedly include to some degree of course.
I think Mangold would do a good job though, he has a wide range from comedy, to action, to drama, and it is a plus that he has also worked with jackman as well... although it was with Kate and Leopold *sigh* but if they had a good repertoire and Jackman has any say he may lean towards Mangold

@cheetoboy - I disagree about Matthew Vaughn for a couple reasons. For starters, Wolverine's script has been described as very dark and serious. Vaughn has very much his own type of style and it is far from "dark and serious". All his work feels very much the same, therefore this film needs someone who can achieve a darker tone.
Secondly, yes, the first reviews of First Class are good and I'm hoping that is the case......but the public still hasn't seen it yet and I cant tell you how many times the first reviewers rave about a film and it ends up being complete and utter trash. So, for me personally, I'm reserving judgement until I see it for myself.
But that's just my opinion.

I would like to see Matthew Vaughn do this because the early reviews on Xmen: First Class have been very good so far and KickAss is one of the best superhero movies of all time, But they should also try to get Bryan Singer back, because everyone said he did great with the first 2 Xmen films although Xmen The last stand wasn't bad, I know a lot of people may not agree but I thought it was a great film, Jean as Phoenix was cool, but anyways another pick for me would be Justin Lin.
