The Wolverine Could Get 'R' Rated Cut Says Hugh Jackman

The Wolverine may shoot an R-rated version and a PG-13 version
The Wolverine won't begin production until spring 2012, although writer Mark Bomback is currently working on the script, which James Mangold will direct from. Star Hugh Jackman made some interesting comments over the weekend, claiming they have been discussing shooting two versions of The Wolverine: a PG-13 theatrical cut, and an R-rated cut.

Here's what Hugh Jackman had to say below.

"There's such great temptation to make an R-rated Wolverine. I've always felt that. I know a lot of fans would like that. I totally get it. If there was ever a superhero that was going to be R-rated, it's Wolverine. However, in the last ten years, I've also met many, many 12, 13, dare I say 10, 14, 15 year-olds who, for them, Wolverine is not just cool, you see it in their eyes. He's everything to them. So my thing is, which James Mangold and I talked about, is let's not put it off the table. There's even a talk of us doing two versions, as in finding a way for us to do both while you shoot it, which could be really cool. But you need to have a really good reason to exclude those fans."

The Wolverine comes to theaters July 26th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold.

It should be R because the 1st Wolverine movie should've been R because we all know Wolvie's . But make it R it could be cool

And the MPAA are just average people like the same parents who argued about the movie ratings in the first place

@ejk1 agreed. I dont think an R rated would be much more different than a pg-13 version... profanity, blood, violence... i dont think that is what wolverine is completely about, the reason the character has lived so long in the comics is because of "good storytelling". I think origins took away from the character and just hope they get wolverine where he should be.

@addiction-non-fatal as far as being full of rage, i think it can still be pg-13 but show that side of logan... i think bryan singer showed it off in a good way in x2 and to some degree in x1, i would like it amped up a bit but there are interesting ways of editing that would make that possible without running into the mpaa.

Hugh sounds pretty desperate! First he says, this Wolverine will be filled with rage! Now it's going to be 'R' Rated? I know actors need to sell the product at hand but your coming off pretty pathetic right about now.

I think a hard, nitty gritty Wolverine film would be nice, but didn't Marvel AND DC both release statements back in '09 that there would be no more R-rated films due to lack of box office performance? I'm sure a hard R Wolverine could change that but I don't think they'd take the chance.

@Smitty-werbenjagermanjensen I think you're onto a good point. The kids probably thought that Origins was sick action. Us older than 16 years of age were the critics. They need to worry about pleasing US.

and if its the kids they are worried about dissappointing, im sure they will be greatful when they are actually able to see it, tht it will be a better film than it would have been if it was pg13

well just like @moviegeek said, if they want to redeem themselves after the crappy origins, they gotta go down the route everyones been wanting them to and go R.

I can understand how they can make alot of money out of pg13 films, kids, teens and even "sum" adults. However that all depends on the movie it self.
The problem I have with today's world when it comes to movie-making is that they all seem to focus on younger groups.
Theres a type of movie that should focus on them but not all of em. an example would be, "Friday the 13th" Nightmare on elm street,
    Halloween, ect.
these r meant to be R RATED. Therefore, pg13 does not fit there, i dont care if most of the cast r teens, or watever, these types of movies r NOT for kids/teens to be watching in the 1st place.
Then theres super hero movies that could work both ways,... In my option.. "batman" spiderman" superman" and even movies like "kick-ass, dare devil" and ghost rider" ...can be cut both ways, PG13 and R-RATED. and im not talking theater wize but rather dvd/blu ray. That way for those parents who are always mad and complaining on things they dont want their kids watching, can get them the "kiddy-pg13 version" and then adults can get the same films but in the "R, unrated, uncut, or extended editions" Parents should stop bbitching and learn to be parents for oncs, Just because 1 parent doesnt like or aprove 1 type of movie, doesnt mean they have to see them. Hell i dont know wats wrong w these parents anyways, they all seem to be locked in the past or sumthing. just about every kid today, has seen an R rated movie,. And i bet both versions of the films will sell. Because really..when you bring out an R rated movie, sum parents will not buy them for their kids because its "naughty" which is the right thing to do. but if they wewre to bring out a pg13 version. then they will buy them. But im guessing thats a waste of money for having 2 types on the shelfs. So they stick to wat sells more. PG13, BLAHHHHHHHH

@brady1138 Kick-Ass was never going to be a game changer because it was a comedy and not based on a hugely-popular comic book. Wolverine is straight-up action and part of a big franchise. And I realize concerns about audience appeal, but the only way that this movie is going to completely erase my memory of that abomination that was Origins will be to go a completely different route. An R-rating would do that.

  20. Bawnian©-Dexeus

So let the babies watch their PG-13 and the adults their R

    8 months agoby @bawnian-dexeusFlag

  21. LuxoIII

@moviegeek No, because that's already been attempted with Kick-Ass, which didn't do so hot in theaters because of its limited appeal. A film is successful based on how many people go to see it, so PG and PG-13 films make a lot more than R-rated films. It couldn't possibly be a game changer, because for Fox to suddenly release an R-rated installment in a hugely popular PG-13 franchise (made so by wide accessability) would cause a majority of its audience to turn away from it. You have to remember that the fan audience is a lot smaller than many believe it is and that fan appeal simply isn't a top priority for film studios since we are in the minority.

At this point Wolverine could get away with an R rating but i doubt the studios will do it. I would love it if they dead but i doubt it. I hope there is some form of Wolvie mask in this one.

I think they should release both a PG-13 rated film and and R rated film and see how they both do in theaters. It would be a HUGE game changer for ALL sci-fi, Comic book and fantasy films in the future!!!

I'd be willing to bet that the R-rated version would make just as much, if not more, money than the PG-13 version.

Ridley Scott is already doing this with Prometheus. The R-rated version wont likely see any action in theaters (unless it becomes more of a demand).....but we will definitely be seeing an R-rated (or Un-rated) version when the Blu-Ray/DVD hits stores. THAT will be amazing!!!!

  30. moviegeek

That's retarded. Release an R-rated cut and be a game-changer for the superhero film as we know it, or don't at all.
