The Walking Dead renewed for a 13-episode Season 2 by AMC
AMC announced today the renewal of The Walking Dead for a 13-episode second season. Since debuting Sunday, October 31, The Walking Dead has broken ratings records, with the series reaching more Adults 18-49 than any other show in the history of cable television.

Today's announcement also includes Fox International Channels' (FIC) global renewal for a second season, following record-breaking premiere ratings in 120 countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. The Walking Dead was the highest-rated original series premiere ever to air on FIC simultaneously worldwide.

"The Dead has spread!" said Charlie Collier, President, AMC. "No other cable series has ever attracted as many Adults 18-49 as The Walking Dead. This reaffirms viewers' hunger for premium television on basic cable. We are so proud to be bringing back The Walking Dead again, across the globe."

  • 10pm airing - 3.1 HH rating with over 4.7 million viewers;

"I wish all programming decisions were no brainers like this one," said Sharon Tal Yguado, SVP Scripted Programming for Fox International Channels. "The Walking Dead is a TV masterpiece on so many levels. We want at least 10 seasons, if not more. Kudos to AMC!"

AMC's The Walking Dead is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. Kirkman serves as an executive producer on the project and three-time Academy Award-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) serves as writer, director and executive producer. Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon, The Incredible Hulk), chairman of Valhalla Motion Pictures, serves as Executive Producer. David Alpert from Circle of Confusion and Charles H. Eglee (Dexter, The Shield, Dark Angel) serve as Executive Producers.

The Walking Dead tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The comic goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies who take a toll on the survivors, and sometimes the interpersonal conflicts present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies that roam the country. Over time, the characters are changed by the constant exposure to death and some grow willing to do anything to survive.

Shot on location in Atlanta, The Walking Dead is led by a cast that includes Andrew Lincoln (Teachers, Love Actually) as Rick Grimes, Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer) as Shane Walsh, Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break) as Lori Grimes, Laurie Holden (The Shield, Stephen King's The Mist) as Andrea, Jeffrey DeMunn (Stephen King's The Mist, The Green Mile) as Dale, Steven Yeun (The Big Bang Theory) as Glen, Emma Bell (The Bedford Diaries) as Amy and Chandler Riggs (Get Low) as Carl Grimes.

    I loved how it was renewed only after 2 Episodes had aired. Let's hope Mr. Darabont can keep it together for next Season.

    Haha, as soon as I post all this about me not liking zombie movies I come up with an original take on zombie films that I will be writing in the future. Go figure.

    Reaching more adults in the history of cable TV? Holy crap!
    I get you too, @Messenger - zombies are the only thing I really like about the horror genre, and lately, movies like 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead remake put a bad taste in my mouth, and I don't find the comedic route much better. This show, however, touches on the same great and essential aspects of the sub-genre that started it in the first place (Night of the Living Dead, 1968). Maybe you're not into survival horror, the thinking man's horror sub-genre, but I think vampires are even more overused and sappy/too fadish for the time being. But again, to each his own.

    LOL, that's all well and good that they are crafting a better zombie story BUT I am just tired of zombie stories. I am not saying that the show is bad, I'm just saying that I myself don't care to watch anything with zombies in it.

    Have you ever eaten so much of food that you happen to love and you get sick of it? That's how I feel about zombie films right now, I've had enough of them right and I'll one day get back into them.

    And I agree that vampires are on this same ticket as zombies but with vampires you have a character development of the actual premise as with zombies film they are just brainless monsters. Yes, the human characters have their own development but I generally don't care about the human's in zombie movies. Which is something TWD had going for it, it made me care about the sheriff or what ever title he holds.

    @messenger... well taken and good points friend, but with all due respect, zombie films have become their own type of genre they are mostly classified as horror but everything can be mixed into a zombie film... there are no rules, you can have comedy, drama, action, horror. Yes, there has been a resurgence in zombie entertainment in the last few years thanks in part to 28 days, and dawn of the dead remake, but there has been a resurgence in vampire films in the last 70 years as well. I understand where you are coming from but i suppose this is where i agree to disagree, just for the simple fact that taking a genre (zombies) and bringing it to a format that seems pretty dead itself (television) AMC has created a pretty entertaining, watchable program. I agree there are parts of the show that have reminded me of other zombie films, but then again there are vampire movies that use the same tried used up formula but still works to some degree with those as well. Personally i love the show so far, and like @daveactor7 said it is reshaping the genre into a more dramatic feel, the zombies are just there to support the story, not vice versa which usually in this genre zombies are first story comes second.

    @Daveactor7

    I get it.

    And I don't have to have an action filled TV show to become interested. I just don't care about this show. I recognized its strong points but it premise of zombies is old and worn out. I hope the show gathers millions of fans but I won't be one of them, because like I said, the whole zombie concept has lost it luster for me.

    I'll continue to watch the episodes cause I don't wanna be one of the d-bags that sh*t talks something and has never seen it.

    For me, AMC's best show is Breaking Bad. Though I haven't see all of S3 it is still an amazing show.

    @Messenger but the walking dead the title itself is not just referring to the zombies, but the people who are struggling to survive. This is a tv show and its doing well in reshaping the zombie genre towards a more dramatic perspective rather then an action filled one

    I watched the first episode and is well directed and written. I'm just tired of zombies period. I mean I tried to hop on the I love zombie ban wagon but it was full, LOL. I got that line from Christopher Titus, except replace zombies with the french. But anyways, zombies have been run into the ground, pardon the pun. I just want a fresh (pardon the pun again, seriously) take on zombies which is why I am actually looking forward to Pride, Prejudice and zombies.

    I'm not saying that the show is bad it's just not as great as everyone makes it out to be.

    On a side note I have a bunch of friends who play zombies on the show and they loved every minute of it.

  13. The Narrator: The Better Man

    @Messenger, the show, which is based off the comics, is original in its own way, simply by not focusing ON being original. Whenever you try to be original in any form of entertainment, you usually fail. However when you simply try to make a good story/film/etc, and you focus on that, in the end it usually comes out as something original. C.S. Lewis said that, although that was my paraphrase. :P

    @Insert, it's only on for 6 episodes this season. What?!

    After the airing of the first episode it was pretty obvious that this was going to happen. The show is brilliant and action packed but there is so much more to the story than just gore and action. It is quite dramatic just give it time. This is some of the best news i have heard all day....since i woke up an hour ago.

    Sadly I only caught part of Episode 1 on MW last night and none of Episode 2. I 'm gonna re-watch Episode 1 on Hulu, but no more eps will be streamed there. Where can I re-catch Episode 2? AMC playing re-runs? It's a high quality show. This is great news.
