The Village takes the #1 selling DVD slot

Movie PictureAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, Friday Night Lights sold about 1.3 million combined DVD and VHS units to rental and retail stores nationwide Tuesday, its first day in release, according to industry sources. That sales figure bodes well for the Universal Pictures drama based on the true story of an Odessa, Texas, high school's 1998 football season, considering the film's domestic boxoffice take was about $61.2 million.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment's release of Touchstone's suspense thriller The Village was the best-selling and -renting DVD last week, according to Nielsen VideoScan and Home Media Retailing magazine, respectively. (Video Store magazine, which reports weekly rental revenue statistics for the home video industry, officially changed its name this week to Home Media Retailing magazine.) The film generated an estimated $11.96 million in consumer rental spending during its first week in release, or roughly 10.5% of its $114.2 million domestic boxoffice take, according to HMR.
