The Twilight Saga: New Moon Breaks Midnight Showing Record

The official tally hasn't been released yet, but early indicators show that a highly-anticipated vampire sequel might have set a record from its midnight debut last night. Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in between $23 and $24 million from midnight screenings, which would be a new record if it holds true.

The mark would eclipse the $22.2 million that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince set this summer, which beat out last summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight's tally of $18.5 million from midnight screenings. The $23-$24 million gross wasn't confirmed, but the site was reporting that rival studios estimated the figure.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened in 3,514 theaters for midnight debuts last night and the film expands to 4,024 theaters today. We'll be sure to keep you posted on this story as soon as the official numbers are released.

UPDATE: 11/20/09 11:15 AM PST)Variety has just posted the official midnight grosses for The Twilight Saga: New Moon and it did indeed break the record with $26.3 million.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on all the box office news from The Twilight Saga: New Moon as soon as we have more information.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon was released November 20th, 2009 and stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke, Ashley Greene, Anna Kendrick, Christian Serratos, Michael Welch. The film is directed by Chris Weitz.

WTF is up with you superjerk90? I wasn't bashing everything, but based on the overwhelming statistics of who saw the first, vs who didn't and why, and the aim of the interviews and press for this sequel, then I can easily surmise that it's mostly aimed at tweens. So what's your problem?? This is afterall an opinionated site.

Oh wait, I suppose the name 'superjerk' sums it up nicely.

The film is going to make money whether people want it to or not it's just that simple. Look I'm a guy but I'm also a student filmmaker, I've read the books as research and found them to be pretty good and the first movie was so-so. No one says you have to like this movie, everyone is free to have his or her own opinion about the movie, I'm going to see the movie tonight and review it because that's what I do, I try to study all movies good or bad to see what worked and what didn't, what attracts that audience and what doesn't. The funny thing to me is that all I've been hearing is negative stuff from people who haven't even seen the film and then the movie breaks the midnight record lol. I know for a fact that the movie won't become like the number one movie of all-time or beat out of The Dark Knight or the Harry Potter series but it will succeed for the first few weeks nonetheless. You can complain about it all you want but in the end you it won't matter. The next film will be the same way and we'll be having this same argument come June 30, 2010.

wow William A Holla then don't watch it then OMFGness you are really a loser i mean what do you do sit on your couch and watch TV while more important people than you are out there making bank and creating movies.Jesus what do you do nothing i bet just don't say anything unless you have anything good to say. I mean here are actors, actresses, and probably a good director who put their hard work into making this movie and one idiot doesn't like it then screw you dude.

I totally agree that they lie about the appeal to make their strategy seem less aimed. It's clearly marketed towards tweens, (guys & girls) as most of the interviews have been supporting that. The love and tough guy aspect that is.

As for the plot, I careless as I've not read or seen either installment. My 22yr old sister liked the first book, as did my mom who expressed some interest in reading the sequels, but that doesn't make me want to flock to see this simply cuz of the craze...despite being a 21yr old tomboy who falls into both categories of the target audience, except for the fact that I aint a preteen obsessor. Given that my mom and sis will rent #1, and see #2, then I'll see the first one anyway, and tag along to #2 ONLY if I don't half to pay admission (costs so damn much nowadays).

V2K has even acknowledged that his 5 star rating of the predecessor was a bit excessive, and that he'll not only review his review, but will give it a new rating. Based on that train of thought in which a former avid fan is toning down the rating, then I expect it isn't 100% horrid, but still suspect it to be 70% horrid.

@Facking: Can you answer me a question? It's been bothering me lately. I see it all the time, in the real world and on the web: Why do people hate others they know make more sense than them? Is it ignorance? Is it frustration? Is it ego? I really don't know.

When you can answer that question in a logical way, I'll be able to admit you said something smart. But until then, I guess I'll just go back to being a "dumbass" because we really do need more "dumbasses" in this world.

The New Moon sequel looks alot better just going by its trailers alone - it certainly has to best the original which was laughable. However, the studio didn't give the first one much of a budget & didn't realize that they had such a juggernaut on their hands. New Moon was produced to appeal more to guys to make a larger money grab; it looks like with all of the pent up anticipation & wider scope, that the box office returns are flooding in. Might see it after the frenzied masses clear out.

"they've said in their interviews that its supposed to appeal to every demographic, not just women"

That's called "lying to make money." Look it up. While you're at it, look up "gullible" in a dictionary.

u guys have to calm down
this movie is not intended as a chick flick
they;ve said in their interviews that its supposed to appeal to every demographic, not just women
and there's nothing wrong with someone liking this franchise, they should defend their honor if they have to

'New Moon''s bad reviews will not likely affect its outcome at the box office, if the public wants to see it let them see it
dont take movies like this so personally

Beat with nickels?...what? Are are trying to say that only ugly girls are seeing this movie? Is your perception of female interests so closed minded that you think only sad and lonely teenage girls like this kind of stuff? It's girls of all kinds, ugly, pretty, stupid, smart, because no matter what a girl looks like or what her personality is, unless she's a lesbian, Jacob Black will entice them. Trust me. I'm in high school. I hear it all the time.

This news doesn't surprise me. It shouldn't surprise anybody. Luckily, the amount of money a movie makes doesn't predict it's quality, so what the f*ck are you mad about? Moviemaniac makes a valid point. You can like this movie, but don't think it's perfect or superior to other films of clear higher quality. I don't have a problem with this series so much as I do with people calling it "masterful" or "the best thing on Earth." I have read the first book, and while it's better than I expected, it's not a masterpiece and I have no interest in knowing the rest of the saga.

Like I say to my classmates, it's not that I absolutely hate it(to the point where I make idiotic assumptions about the type of girl who sees it)...it's just that it's so easy to make fun.

I don't look like I got beat with nickels but I am gay so I fall into that category. Yea the movie is not There Will Be Blood but it was still a great adaptation and far better than the first movie. I will be seeing it more than once. I gladly contributed to the midnight showings. I really did enjoy it. I'm not afraid to admit it. Do I realize Dark Knight is better? Well of course but don't harp on this movie just because YOU don't like it.

Not surprised really, it's not gonna beat The Dark Knight's opening weekend but it will be huge, in the top 5 I think. Final box office for the film will be ranging from probably $250-$300 million I'd estimate.
