The Tree of Life Blu-ray artwork

Through stunning cinematography and raw emotional power Malick's hymn to life excavates answers to the most haunting and personal human questions through a kaleidoscope of the intimate and the cosmic, from the raw emotions of a family in a small Texas town to the wildest, infinite edges of space and time, from a boy's loss of innocence to a man's transforming encounters with awe, wonder and transcendence.

The Blu-ray Disc presentation utilizes maximum bit rate encoding and 7.1 audio and a 2.0 stereo mix to bring Malick's visually stunning masterpiece to life providing consumers with a premium cinematic viewing experience for the home. An exclusive 30-minute documentary on the making of the film, Exploring The Tree of Life, allows fans to dig even deeper into Malick's visionary work and his cinematic legacy through interviews with his collaborators and cast members as well as with directors Christopher Nolan and David Fincher who share an appreciation for his work.

Under Malick's careful direction The Tree of Life showcases complicated and haunting powerhouse performances by Academy-Award nominee Brad Pitt (Fight Club), Academy Award winner Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River) and newcomer Jessica Chastain (The Help).

An impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's, the film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt).

The Tree of Life Blu-ray Combo Pack includes a bonus DVD and Digital Copy version of the film. Pre-book date is September 14.

Fox Searchlight Pictures and River Road Entertainment present The Tree of Life, written and directed by Terrence Malick and starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and newcomer Jessica Chastain. The producers are Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Grant Hill.

The Tree of Life was released May 27th, 2011 and stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain, Hunter McCracken, Laramie Eppler, Tye Sheridan, Fiona Shaw, Jessica Fuselier. The film is directed by Terrence Malick.

Missed it in theater...really wanted to see ...I heard the good, the bad and the ugly on this film!!

"The Tree of Life" received the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival ...then read somewhere that even Sean Penn says he was trying to figure out what role he played in Terrence Malick's Palme d'Or-winning film...!!

    Hmmmmmmmm.......

@dan1 That's actually been my thinking ever since I saw the first trailer for Girl w/the Dragon Tattoo. Even though it's not the kinda film the Academy generally goes for, the quality will be undeniable. I think it'll either win best picture or best director one. After all, the Academy loves repeat nominees without wins, and they love giving out "compensatory" awards for past years' snubs. Fincher, I would say, is at the top of both of those lists.

@thedude-abides @ghostman If Fincher brings the thunder with Dragon, you think the Academy will make nice with him after being snubbed with Social Network?

@ghostman All great picks. It'll be tough to determine exactly how many without a definite number of nominees. I think I'll just pick 10 every year, and if only 7 films are nominated, I'll just use my top 7. That way I'll at least have enough if they do choose 10.

@thedude-abides My picks for possible Best Pictures are: Super 8, The Ides of March, Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Tree of Life, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Contagion.

@ghostman It's the only movie to come out so far this year that is aside from maybe Super 8. Check out my list of early oscar favorites 2011 if you want:

@thedude-abides I too am pumped for this Blu-Ray. Seeing the film itself tomorrow at a Boston arthouse. It's finally showing there!

@thedude-abides I think Scarface is overrated, but I agree with pretty much everything else you've said. There are other movie forums with more film-literate communities out there. Try filmspotting for starters. If you're not listening to their podcast, it's probably the best movie podcast out there.

@dan1 Awesome!! Can't wait. I'm seeing all three as well, so we can compare. That is if Drive isn't limited release.

@dan1 No, you're right. And I'm tellin' you, man, Drive is going to demolish those other two. Maybe not Contagion, as I see them very close in terms of quality. But it's definitely going to demolish Moneyball. At least give it a shot. Winding Refn is the man.

@thedude-abides And of that list, I really want to see Contagion and Moneyball. Maybe Drive if I can convince someone else to pay lol.

@thedude-abides You're supposed to laugh at those who mock the classics, not sit there with that aghast look staring at the computer screen lol.

Psycho *is* a bonafide classic, Scarface is awesome, and long live Samuel Jackson's 'motherf*cker' lines. Are you really gonna let some bad taste get you down, bro?

  21. thedude-abides

Drive will be the best movie of September, followed by Contagion for those who have any interest in seeing a real movie. I should give a dude-abides monthly preview:

    1. Drive
    2. Contagion
    3. Moneyball
    4. 50/50 or Dream House

  23. thedude-abides

@dan1 I guess you're right. I've just learned to take it at face value. I mean, this is the site where Psycho sucks, Scarface isn't a classic, and all of Quentin Tarantino's movies suck because he uses too many curse words, right? Curse words? Are you f'ing kidding me, lol? How can anyone take anything to heart coming from a community with those ideologies? I just read the fan reaction and try not to comment.

  24. Lord McLovin of MovieWeb

@thedude-abides Well, since it was a limited release and not widely known, people would rather see a mainstream superhero action/adventure summer movie than a master-piece art house film in theaters instead...

@thedude-abides Come on, dude. We live in the age of superhero movies. People like their larger than life heroes a lot more than some hoyty toyty artful film from Malick. There may come a day where even I get a wild hair up my ass and sit and watch Tree of Life, and a great conversation spans from that, but you gotta come to grips with reality (or at least this site lol), and stop getting yourself flustered with us lousy cbm lovers.
