JC wanted to do a sequel in which a distress signal was sent via Windows from the comms room sometime before Blair destroyed it. Macready & Childs would also have suffered frostbite. But Universal refused to fit JC's fee which 'went up' for no reason, as JC has expressed his love of fiscal benefits over certain projects in the past: IE- he could've made the sequel, but was charging too much. As a result, in 2003 the Sci-Fi Channel announced a miniseries version of JC's sequel would be filmed to debut in 2004, but that project for whatever reason never came to light, and in February 2009 was officially declared dead when Sci-Fi announced plans to revive their station as SyFy.

Also, it's important to note that while the original is a true Carpenter/Bodine masterpiece, it was also a box office flop, only profitting $3,782,838 after breaking even due to "Blade Runner" being released on the same day of 6/25/82, and "ET" being released two weeks before that on 6/11/82, thus presenting three very different sci-fi films from June 1982. Also June isn't exactly a month for horror films reigning supreme. Critics blasted it cuz they couldn't stand the 180* turnaround from the feel of "ET," and criticized what they considered at the time to be overly nauseating effects (which the praised actually, just didn't enjoy). And "Blade Runner" was a totally different concept, not aliens from another world come to attack or harvest, but rather, a totally different society with an awe inspiring presentation. Certainly a summer flick, while "ET" was a family catered film, with "The Thing" falling short due to this. Though it made a lot of money from the subsequent VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, & Blu-Ray releases. As well as the always appreciated cult following.

Point being, that the franchise is still profitable, hence why they're making this prequel at all as an independent flick for $38,000,000. Granted April 29th isn't a date for horror either, but it seems audiences today turn a blind eye for such releases.

Granted the plot does resemble a remake as it will take place in the same environment in the same type of station, though Norwegian. But calling it a flat out remake would tick off hardcore fans, and if they really wanted a totally new look, then they would've had this take place anywhere else in the world. Like just having Childs secretly be the thing which goes berzerk when he gets back home, presuming a rescue would be made. That'd be inventive, or a straight out reboot, or rekindling, or whatever you wanna call it. Of course we know the basics of the ending and that it's pretty much a remake. And therein lies the problem, this will still be a rip off of JC's '82 version which actually resembles the novella rather than the Howard Hawkes original. But given how great the flick was, how much it relied on tension and suspense to be successful, and the fact that Michael Bay isn't tackling it, but rather a Dutch filmmaker, then I'm willing to be optimisitc in a good way.

I wish they would have done a sequel. Prequel madness is out of control. It's like, "Oh, no...that wasn't the beginning, this is". NO it's not! The beginning was the beginning. We saw all we needed to se in the archival footage they found. They found the ship, the alien got loose, assimilated everybody and then attacked Kurt Russell and company, the end. BUT, there could have been a follow-up, to see what happened to MacReady and Childs. That's what I would've preferred. Well, we'll see. Hope they keep it faithful to the original(s).

This is a Prequel, NOT a remake..I'm all for a current take on the backstory to Carpenter's '82 horror masterpiece...that movie is the blueprint for new filmakers to study for its perfection of story, suspense & omg/idelible special effects that Still hold up!

I know it's a prequel. But they should at least make it known in the title. Something like, "THE THING BEFORE", etc.
