The Simpsons Movie Takes the DVD Sales Crown
The Simpsons: The Movie was the top seller on DVD for the week ending December 23. The news isn't all that surprising, when you consider the massive marketing campaign Fox Home Entertainment rolled out for the news disc. New York City's iconic Empire State Building was turned Simpsons yellow, the first time the building was involved in a movie promotion, NYC's Bryant Park displayed a 25-foot inflatable Homer along with 2,500 inflatable donuts and on Wall Street, promotional teams were handing out yellow Santa hats.
Last week's first and second best DVD sellers each dropped down a spot, with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix taking the second spot and The Bourne Ultimatum taking third place. Both titles were in their second weeks of video release.
Despite its sales drop, The Bourne Ultimatum remained tops in the rental department for the second week in a row. The third film in the Jason Bourne series took in $12.8 million in rental revenue, down just slightly from its debut week take of $15.4 million. The Simpsons: The Movie was just behind Bourne in the rentals, taking the second spot with $11.8 million in rentals.
