FilmDistrict has released the first trailer for the upcoming adaptation The Rum Diary, which arrives in theaters nationwide on October 28. Click on the video player below to watch Johnny Depp portray Paul Kemp, a fictional version of author Hunter S. Thompson.

The Rum Diary was released October 28th, 2011 and stars Johnny Depp, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Rispoli, Amber Heard, Richard Jenkins, Giovanni Ribisi, Amaury Nolasco, Marshall Bell. The film is directed by Bruce Robinson.

    I dunno if anybody except me noticed this--probably not, I recognize weird things--but the avatar for this article when originally clicking on the link featured Depp giving a great mugshot of Jim Jones. Unsettling for the subject matter yes. Foreshadowing a future role? Probably not.

    Looks better, albeit funnier, than I expected. Can't wait. As for his eccentricities, all of his out there roles embody different personas. The only real thing carried over is his natural charisma and upbeat attitude (even in Sweeney Todd, where it was subtle). However, when he does get into roles like this, he's not being so much eccentric as he is charismatic, rarely poignant, and free spirited, fitting the vibe of Thompson. Roles like this, Public Enemies and Blow easily make up for his more quirky roles.
