The Rock Takes First Place At The Box Office With Gridiron Gang
One of them was the number one film this weekend - Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson stars in Gridiron Gang. The film made $15 million in its debut; The Rock stars opposite rapper Xzibit as a guy who turns a bunch of hard-nosed prisoners into some hard-nosed football players.
Also based on a real story, Scarlett Johansson, Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, and Mia Kirshner as The Black Dahlia. The 1940's murder of Elizabeth Short (Kirshner) brought in $10.3 million over it's first weekend.
The family animated film, Everyone's Hero stepped up in third place with $6.1 million. The final film, worked on by Christopher Reeves, is about a boy who is on the search for a stolen Babe Ruth baseball bat. Whoopi Goldberg, Rob Reiner, and William H. Macy lend their voices to the film.
What was also interesting was the top four films were also all newcomers to the box office. In fourth, as the last of the new films, Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett, and Rachel Bilson in The Last Kiss; the love triangle that is this drama made $4.7 million this weekend. A real ensemble cast, also starring Blythe Danner, Tom Wilkinson, Casey Affleck, Eric Christian Olsen, Harold Ramis, and Michael Weston.
Last week's number one, The Covenant dropped four spots to fifth place. The supernatural thriller scared up $4.7 million at the box office this weekend, starring Steven Strait as the leader of a 'Craft-like' society; the two week total is $15.7 million, says Box Office Mojo.
In sixth place, Invincible - another real-life story of Vince Papale, who played football for the Philadelphia Eagles at the age of 30; Mark Wahlberg stars as Vince, while Greg Kinnear plays coach Dick Vermeil. The Disney flick took in $3.9 million over the weekend, to take the four week run up to $50.9 million.
It was magic for The Illusionist in seventh place with $3.7 million for a total of $23.2 million over five weeks. The period piece has Ed Norton as an on-the-run magician from policeman Paul Giamatti, and in love with Jessica Biel.
Little Miss Sunshine rolled into eighth place with $3.3 million this weekend. After a major platform open, the ensemble cast has Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Alan Arkin, Paul Dano, and Abigail Breslin; in eight weeks, the comedy/drama has brought in $46.3 million.
Ben Affleck, Adrien Brody, Diane Lane, and Bob Hoskins in Hollywoodland scooted seven spots down to ninth place, bringing in $2.7 million for a two week total of $10.5 million. Another real-story, this one looks at the investigation into the death of the original Superman, George Reeves.
And finally, Jason Statham got a little Crank-ed out in theaters finishing in tenth place with $2.7 million for a three week total of $24.4 million; that doubles the production total of $12 million.
Gridiron Gang was released September 15th, 2006 and stars Dwayne Johnson, Xzibit, L. Scott Caldwell, Leon Rippy, Kevin Dunn, Jade Yorker, David V. Thomas, Setu Taase. The film is directed by Phil Joanou.
