Alejandro González Iñárritu has signed on to direct Warner Bros.' American West drama The Revenant, for Anonymous Content.

The story is based on the 2003 novel "The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge" by Michael Punke. Mark L. Smith wrote the screenplay.

Set in 1823, The Revenant centers on a fur trapper who's mauled by a grizzly bear and robbed by the two men enlisted to stay with him. Fueled by anger, the trapper survives and makes his way through hundred of miles of uncharted wilderness to exact retribution.

No production date has been set.

The Revenant was released in 2011. The film is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
