Universal Pictures has released the official synopsis for the upcoming thriller The Purge, from producer Jason Blum of Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Bradley Fuller, and Andrew Form.

Starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, the story finds the U.S. government allowing criminals one night a year when they can commit any and all crimes possible within a 12 hour window.

Here is the official synopsis.

"If on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would you do? In The Purge, a speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home. In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal. The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin's (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide."

The Purge comes to theaters June 7th, 2013 and stars Lena Headey, Ethan Hawke, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane, Edwin Hodge, Rhys Wakefield, Tony Oller, Alicia Vela-Bailey. The film is directed by James DeMonaco.

Lol, @dan1. Yeah, yeah. So I did. :P

What can I say? The fates delight in almost constantly proving me wrong. Then again, in cases like this, I have no problem with being proven wrong. We could really use all the amazing users we can get/maintain.

@narrator And you were just saying the other day how the community was shrinking/losing its mojo :P

The plot seems a little out there, but it's extremism has definitely got my attention. I, like apparently everyone else here, also love Lena Headey, so that's a huge plus. Glad to see her roles in the Sarah Conner Chronicles and 300 have given her more roles in feature films and shows like Game of Thrones.

Be sure to tag me in that new review as well, @wichitagalzl. I haven't seen one from you in ages, and I figured you'd left. Glad to see you're coming back. :)

@dan1 Haha it was only a year! College and work was killing me, still is, but I am getting more free time. Plus having a film class where I have to write a film analysis all the time kind of took some fun out of reviewing lol. But I am hopefully back for a while!

I love Lena Headey. It always amuses me when she plays mean characters on TV or movies, she's like the sweetest person you could meet in real life from her interviews and panels I've seen.

This premise sounds cool. Let people thin themselves out lol. Population control to the extreme!

The Plot is just plain stupid, the goverment gives criminals a 12 hour period to do whatever they want, then why the hell they keep them in jail in the first place?

It has a unique premise, and sounds interesting and it has the added bonus of having Lena Headey and Eithan Hawke in it, so count me in for now.
