The Producer of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li Dishes on The Film

For fans of the Street Fighter video game and anime series, news about a live-action film update make them nervous, especially after the disaster that was the first Street Fighter movie. Fortunately, as was revealed in an interview with Collider, Ashok Amritaj, the producer of Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li seem to understand the series and knows what they fans actually want from the film.

Amritaj believes that a large part of the failure of the first film was the inclusion of too many characters, and as such, he says that this film will focus on Chun-Li's story. "We feel that in the Street Fighter world universe there are 3 key characters which are Ken, Ryu and Chun Li," Amritaj said. "So we hope the movie works but we've taken Chun Li and this is a movie Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li so the Chun Li movie we've gone with and if it works we hope to do Ken and Ryu and so on. But we would do Chun Li and then we'd have Bison and Vega and you know some of the Balrog and all that."

Amritaj also reveals which characters from the video games will appear in the film. "Chun Li, Bison, Balrog, Vega, Maya, Cantana I think have shown up in parts of the video game but are not major characters," he says. "They're minor characters; at least that's what Capcom says to me. I don't follow it to the minutia... and then there's Gen. So 7 or 8 characters."

He also reveals two things that should please fans to no end. Firstly, he says that the action is very much classic martial arts movie, but that signature moves from the video games will appear, such as Chun-Li's spinning bird kick, and the fiery ball of Chi known as the Hadouken. And speaking of the Hadouken, he finally says that if Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li does well, then he fully intends to go into production for a film featuring either Ken or Ryu.

Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, from a Justin Marks script, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li stars Kristin Kreuk, Michael Clark Duncan, Neal McDonough, Taboo and Chris Klein. Moon Bloodgood, Edmund Chen and Cheng Pei Pei have also signed on to star in this video game adaptation.

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li was released February 27th, 2009 and stars Kristin Kreuk, Chris Klein, Neal McDonough, Robin Shou, Moon Bloodgood, Josie Ho, Taboo, Michael Clarke Duncan. The film is directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak.

Okay so let me get this straight, he named the three right? If you ask any fan or gamer who you think of when they say Street Fighter, they say Ryu & Ken. They should be the main characters. End of story. And the two main bad guys should be Vega and Sagat.
