Comic Book Movie has posted an exclusive press release from Allied I.M. that divulges the secret storyline behind Martin Campbell's upcoming DC Comics adaptation Green Lantern, which stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Blake Lively as Carol Ferris. Comic Book Movie claims that the following is the official plot synopsis for Green Lantern sent out on behalf of Time Warner:

Bringing the enduringly popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) in the title role, under the direction of Martin Campbell (Casino Royale).

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax...he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Martin Campbell directs Green Lantern from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg, story by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim, based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.

@CBF, I'm not even sure that Parallax is the corporeal villain. The only pictures I've seen of a villain is of Hector Hammond. Parallax may only be a far off threat that is mentioned, but not seen. Hammond could be trying to bring Parallax to Earth, and Jordan must stop him. The use of Parallax in this movie could be in name only, simply as a way of foreshadowing what's to come. No way in hell is Parallax taking over Jordan's body in the first movie. That would be franchise-suicide.

@luca Like you said, that's "to you." It's not that way to anybody else, as you can see from the comments. Nobody has agreed with you. Geoff Johns is superb, and the majority of comic book readers will agree. You are alone on that.

No. To me, Johns is an average overrated writer. All his work has been pretty poor so far and I've followed him in "Avengers", "Infinite Crisis", "Green Lantern", "Justice Society of America", "Legion of 3 worlds", "The Flash rebirth", "Adventure comics" and "Blackest Night" (all in digital format... I'm not that rich).
The fact that he's conceptualizing the whole DC movieverse scares me a lot.

@Insert I agree. Geoff Johns is an amazing storyteller, and you mention he's done great work prior to Green Lantern. And that is absolutely true. One of his best that I have read so far, was the recent "Superman: Brainiac." The way he retold the origin of the Bottle City of Kandor and fit it into Supergirl's life on Krypton was genius. He's good at updating old stories instead of straight retconning them from continuity. He is one of my favorite writers in comics, next to Loeb and Straczynski.

@ejk1 I was thinking about that. I wonder if they plan on making a trilogy, if they are they may save Sinestro/Yellow Lantern for the third film. I just thought Parallax came after the Sinestro story.

  5. The Narrator: The Better Man

@JoeSocio, what the hell is up with that random comment man? Seriously? And why are people hating on Christians? I don't see any other religion (except catholics) getting that much hate. I mean people have created a rather exaggerated and retarded stereotype for Christians, almost as bad as they have them for some races (african american/asian). I mean thats messed up.

As for the argument below, I am 100% with @Insert. I mean, what Johns has done is amazing. I used to think GL was a meh character, but Johns got me into him since the first pages of Rebirth, and I have enjoyed every single page following. I mean it expands on the mythology, and is epic and character driven at the same time, not a easy task.

And just because you don't like it, doesn't make you right.

Also, "looks like?" So you haven't actually read it? Have you read ANY of Johns' work on GL? The series is fantastic. You can't quite form an opinion if you haven't read any of it.

Yes, Jordan's city was wiped out, but would he really go that insane if he wasn't somehow corrupted by an outside force? He wiped out the entire Corps, killed friends and allies...his initial anger towards Coast City's destruction is how Parallax was able to corrupt him. Jordan was left vulnerable...he was beginning to feel fear, as anyone would after such a tragedy, but the GLs are supposed to overcome fear. That's how Parallax was drawn to him. I think that's more symbolic and creative than Jordan just creating a super villain alter ego, and it works for the GL universe. At it's core, Green Lantern's story is a space epic, and Johns unlocked that potential. Every arc of his run on the book has felt like a Star Wars movie on steroids.

I'm sorry, but to me Johns' idea remains bullsh*t. Making Jordan losing his mind was very humane and realistic (his city was wiped out, for f*ck's sake!).
At the contrary, "Rebirth" looks like a retcon written from a geeky fanboy upset by Marz writing.
Just because you like it, doesn't mean I'm wrong.

Whoa.. they're using Parallax? So soon? Cool. I am sure the pacing and story will be great and effects top notch. Actin is the only thing I'm concerned about.

Campbell is the only reason why I would even consider seeing this film. I think they're making way too many superhero films. Not every hero needs his own damn film.

luca, writers are always expanding on past storylines to either explain things or introduce new ideas. What Johns did wasn't childish...it was creative. The only reason Parallax was even introduced in the first place was because sales were decreasing and they wanted to introduce a new GL. So, they turned Jordan into a super villain.

It's a brilliant idea to have Parallax be a parasitic entity born from fear. It's the Green Lantern's achilles heel, which is why Jordan could be corrupted by it. Johns really reinforces the idea that Jordan is the ultimate hero in the series. He wouldn't let so much tragedy destroy him unless he was influenced by an evil force outside of his control, a force that is the complete opposite of why he was chosen for the Corps.

You can't just deny comic book storylines. To say Parallax isn't a parasite just because you don't like the idea is bullsh*t. It's been written, it's done. It's not like Johns isn't a capable writer. He'd proven himself before Rebirth and his run on GL has been nothing but superb since it began.

Parallax is NOT a parasite! That bullsh*t Geoff Johns wrote in "Rebirth" is completely lame, childish and unrespectful of Ron Marz's story arc.
Parallax is Hal Jordan after Coast City has been destroyed in "Reign of the Supermen" and he tries to rebuild it. Not some f*cking giant yellow bug!
They should have started the shared universe with "The death of Superman" and then continued with "Reign of the Supermen", "Emerald twilight", "Zero hour" and "The final night".

Parallax can exist without Hal Jordan...it's a parasite embodying fear. There is nothing wrong with Parallax being the villain, just as long as they hint at the fact that Jordan will ultimately be corrupted by it.

That was a pretty random rant, there JoeSocio. Are you referring to the choice to use Hal Jordan over Jon Stewart? If you are, here's why: Hal Jordan was the first GL introduced to comics(besides Alan Scott, but he's not a member of the Corps). Stewart came in as a replacement when Jordan went AWOL. I'm sure Stewart will make an appearance in a sequel. It would have been a good idea to have him in this movie as Hal's "good friend and confidante" instead of Tom Kalmaku...I don't even know who that is. Nevertheless, using Hal was the right thing to do.

Both Black Panther and Luke Cage are getting the big screen treatment, both of which are black characters. Did you forget Blade was largely successful?

Anyways, this plot synopsis sounds pretty faithful. Didn't think they'd use Parallax so soon, but it makes sense. Predicted cliffhanger ending: Sinestro goes bad...in some way lol

JoeSocio, you also forgot Blade. As for the politics of this world, I'd rather stay out of them, mainly because I like the feeling of being clean. I quite frankly don't understand where you're coming from. You talk about Christian Standards, but have you ever seen a South Park or Family Guy episode? These two shows constantly satirize religion, in particular Christianity. Also, be careful of accepting and embracing all differences. A month ago, someone wrote a movie review of Kick-Ass in which they stated a desire to have sex with Hit-Girl(thankfully, that review has since been removed). Is this a difference we should embrace? The desire to have sex with children? I know I'm taking it to the far extreme, but when you say "accept it all," you are saying to accept even these extremes. I do agree with freedom of speech, which is slowly degrading under the weight of political correctness, as long as the person accepts responsibility for his/her words and the possible backlash that can come with them. Government does not need to censor people; the reaction of the masses will tell the speaker if they went over the line(this has happened in sports at least a few hundred times in the last thirty years).

CBF, I don't mind that Sinestro is not the main villain in this movie. It may prove better to build up the mentor/student relationship in the first movie, and then turn it into a betrayer/betrayed relationship in the second movie.

    2 years agoby @ejk1Flag

  28. CBF

@JoeSocio you must've forgot Steel. LOL

And if the globalists have their way, you're in for a big surprise regarding Internet censorship. Just look at China and Australia's Internet for an example. I hope it doesn't come to that, but Obama has already been making announcements about "too much information is too much of a good thing," and "our kids need to turn off the TV and Internet." Don't buy into that propaganda, they will try to shut down the Internet and bring it back up as Internet2 controlled by the CIA, blocking a bunch of sites and there will be massive censorship. Seriously, they are attempting to do this right now. That's why they set up the Cyber Security Act. Just like the Patriot Act, it's all a scam.

I like to point flaws in modern civilization. Like why is it that the only black super hero movie made so far, was completely coined up, as the only black super hero, Hanc*ck? I feel like this modern world is positive, as long as it stands up the Christian Standards. F*ck religion, f*ck politics, let us all live as citizens of the world and quit classifying everything black and white, embrace differences, accept it all, and quit casting the normal BULLSH*T! I like Ryan Reynolds, but in this day and age, we need more walks of life based off the old world. And why in the hell is freedom of speech censored on the internet; the last true expression of freedom to date.
