The New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie Will Be a CGI/Live-Action Hybrid

For the past month, rumors have been flying about what form the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film might take, with Kevin Eastman claiming there would be a live-action film, and almost immediately Steve Murphy denying the rumor. Well, MTV talked to Peter Laird, the other co-creator of the Turtles, and current owner of the rights to the characters, and he revealed that they are actually close to having an announcement ready about a hybrid Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Laird stated that there was no intention of creating another live-action film like the original three, with stuntmen in animatronic Turtle suits, but that instead the film might have live-action humans and sets, combined with realistic CGI Turtles (and possibly other characters, like their rat mentor, Splinter.)

That said, Laird was quick to state that a final storyline for the film had not been settled on yet, so there is no word on what villains or supporting characters would be appearing. He didn't discount the possibility of bringing back the villainous Shredder, but he said "I am also excited about the possibility of creating some new characters for the movie."

So, that's the official word. There are talks for another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, but it won't be entirely live action like the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, nor will it be entirely CGI like the recent TMNT. Instead, we will see a mixture of CGI and live actors, like we saw with Scooby Doo and Alvin and the Chipmunks (though hopefully to less comedic effect).

In TMNT (the fourth one), the Foot Clan is back, but they are led by the Chinese chick. And at the end, she tells them that someone from their past will be in their future, which sets up this one, supposedly.

I'm all for Slash as the villain, the evil turtle. He's badass, and can take all of the turtles on himself.

So it will be filmed like Transformers lol....since it's action I think that'd be more appropriate thing to compare it to...

I just want SOME real-movement turtles. Even if they have to just put actors in suits, then do the faces and touch-ups digitally, i will be psyched. I love the original movie.

This hybrid of a movie may prove to be ground breaking if it is done correctly. Like I've been suggesting, if they used real martial artists in green, blue, and black suits for lighting on the motion capturing and animate the turtles over the stunt men, it could prove to be incredible. The turtles could do more than they've ever been able to do in any of their adaptations including the weekly cartoon series. There could be real choreography to work with. The actors would have real characters to work with. And proportion the turtles appropriately, making them 4'11" at the most. If they go for a gritty tone it would do it justice as long as there is the underlying humor to break the edginess of it. Keep the sum of most of the traditions that go into the weaving of the tale that makes the original storyline what it is. It was the undertone of traditions and honor that made them compelling. That's what made the first movie incredible in that there was a deeper meaning to their teachings than their silly antics. It began to stray from that element in the following two movies. TMNT was not a bad adaptation, but I've seen better animation. Though when they were in action, it was wowing.

I do look forward to seeing the development on this project. I anticipate it will be a fun experience. One that I can share with my child as my father had with me when the first movie came from the depths of the sewer. Nostalgia aside, all these reinventions and remakes help me to share some of the same joys I had as a child with my own. In that respect, I'm not opposed to most of them. But this, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was the biggest thing in my time, and I hope that this new addition to the saga gives me the same chills as I got when Raphael threw his sai into the lamp in the alley way to create darkness for his brothers to trample the thugs and rescue April from being a victim in the surging crime wave in New York City. I want to feel goosebumps as my daughter grins from the first sound of them shouting,
"COWABUNGA!!!" triumphantly. Hopefully we're getting ready for Turtle Power.
