Universal Pictures is looking to reboot The Mummy franchise once again, with Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts penning the first draft of the script.
The Mummy being rebooted by Universal Pictures
The Mummy was rebooted in 1999, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz starring in a more family-friendly version of the 1932 genre classic. It spawned the sequels The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, all of which took in over $400 million worldwide. Here's what Jon Spaihts had to say about bringing The Mummy back to its original horror roots.
"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus, to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before."
Sean Daniel, who produced all three The Mummy movies, will return as a producer. No production schedule was given.
The Mummy was released May 7th, 1999 and stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Kevin J. O'Connor, Oded Fehr, Jonathan Hyde, Erick Avari. The film is directed by Stephen Sommers.
