The Lion King Set for 3D Conversion

An animation legend has recently revealed that an animated classic will hit theaters in all three dimensions in the next few years. Empire recently spoke with producer Don Hahn, who revealed that The Lion King is being readied for a 3D conversion. Here's an excerpt from the site's article.

"I'm actually trying to work out a 3D conversion of The Lion King. I'll be doing that when I go back to the States in a couple of weeks," he said, explaining that we shouldn't expect to see it for a while yet, since the Disney boffins are taking their time in making Simba, Zazu et al pop out of the screen. "It's going to be spectacular - we will do a good job for ya! The technology is tremendous. We did The Nightmare Before Christmas a few years ago and Tim thought it was better than the original because it allows you to walk onto the set."

Hahn also revealed that a sequel to the 80s animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is still in the works.

"Yeah, I couldn't possibly comment. I deny completely, but yeah... if you're a fan, pretty soon you're going to be very, very, very happy."

We reported back in October that Who Framed Roger Rabbit? screenwriters Peter S. Seaman and Jeffrey Price were working on the script for the sequel.

The Lion King in 3-D? Okay! I guess that works. Did that with Toy Story and Toy Story 2 last year.

Love The Lion King but no to 3d unless you're doing it for only blu-ray dvds.

@moviegeek. I am not a 3D "hater". I just find it unappealing to me, and unnecessary for most films that it's attached too. The Lion King is a good example of something that doesn't need to be re-released just to be in 3D. If Disney wants a 3D cartoon, make a new and original one, but don't re-release an actual children's classic just to make a few more bucks. Especially one that really doesn't warrant it. It's not that type of film. But whatever, we can't stop this, studios will be studios.

there they go ruining more movies with this 3D garbage.

    1. the lion king does not need to be rereleased into theatres to begin with. is disney not making enough money that they have to keep rereleasing their old movies?? and with this tacky 3D gimmick.

    2. tell me again WHY this movie needs to be in 3D?? i dont get it. is it necessary for they story?? was the movie not good enough as it was?

    3. i think we've all seen this movie enough times as it is. i know i have. definately wont be buying a ticket to see this. not in 2D or 3D. not with ticket prices they way they are. i'm not paying 12 bucks to see a movie i've already seen a hundred times and saw during it's original theatrical run.

    yeah, no thanks.

    3D Haters, sighh..

Actually a scene from Beauty and the Beast was transposed into the 3D technology for a screening and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The people there were blown away at how the 2D was able to look realistic. I believe they can make it work.

And @drewski37 We all can agree that the best use of 3D was James Cameron's version in Avatar. And NOTHING was there simply to pop out at you. If you want 3D to be used as a gimmick, rent Spy Kids 3D and enjoy. I think the scope of The Lion King can become vastly improved to make a more immersive experience.

iam sorry i seen the first two toy stories in 3d and i think it failed nothing popped out at ya it just looked clearer and sounded better then before, if a movie is not originally made in 3d it should not try to look like its in 3d it just doesnt do anything for it, when i hear 3d you think whoa thats coming out of the screen monsters vs aliens is a good 3d movie because there is alot of things that were made to look like they were coming out of the screen at ya, my kids reacted to it a lot more then the toy stories that were redone and had nothing special in them......

Not surprised, the movie world is being taken over by f*cking pointless 3D. Toy Story 3 was the best 3D movie ever, and I didn't even notice it was it in 3D because the movie was so damn good.

NO! I actually liked the Lion King growing up, and to do this. Theres just no need for it. It's not like the case of Titanic, which is being rel-released in 3D and Imax. Thats cool. But this.. This is milking.
