The Last Airbender Will Be Converted to 3D

The Last Airbender gets the 3D treatment
It seems the 3D craze that has been sweeping Hollywood has found another convert. Deadline New York is reporting that M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender will be converted into 3D.

Unlike most 3D conversions, though, it seems that the film will stay put in its current release date, currently set at July 2. Just earlier today we reported that The Green Hornet was being "enhanced" into 3D and the release date was pushed a month to January 14, 2011.

Ain't It Cool News had apparently been sitting on the story for awhile, and it seems that they have been working on the conversion process for some time now.

We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further news on The Last Airbender as soon as we have more information.

The Last Airbender was released July 1st, 2010 and stars Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Nicola Peltz, Randall Duk Kim, Jessica Andres, Noah Ringer, Seychelle Gabriel. The film is directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

parkwilliams, you are right about that, however, there have been movies in the past that have only been released in the theatres in 3d format such as spy kids, sharkboy and lavagirl, and my bloody valentine

@nightwatch1203: I don't think that's true. Not all theatres are equipped to show 3D formatted films which means that until the technology becomes basically universal there will always be 2D versions released, at least for now. Even Avatar had a 2D release and its the biggest 3D film of the century.

you dont always have the choice to watch it in 2d because sometimes they only release the 3d version of the film and not the 2d one. and soon all studios might do that so people will have no choice but to watch the 3d version

Also, when i was watching the daily show the little thing on the bottem of the screen said it was in 3D now, the f*cking daily show what is the point of that

it is sad to say that 3D is here to stay, the proof is they are now putting out 3D tv's so we might as well get use to it.

And none of you can just drive somewhere that does offer it in 2D? I almost always have to drive one or two hours to see good movies in any format at all because the one theatre we have here only has two cinemas, neither of which offer 3D, and usually gets new movies a month after the release date.

Did you even see Clash of the Titans in 3D, Vanboy? It f*cking sucked. I wouldn't even call it 3D.

Vanboy, I already stated that some theaters don't give you the option. So please, bang your head against your keyboard and spare us the trouble of having to read your stupid comments.

I had to see Clash of the Titans in sh*tty 3D because the theater didn't offer it in 2D. It's not that we don't like 3D, it's that we don't like sh*tty conversion 3D, especially when we don't have the option of seeing the movie another way.

    Dumbass.

3d would really work for the bending scenes. I'll check it out. Here's the question though. When is 3D ever Necesarry for a film? I mean really. Not even in Avatar was it Necesarry. It's just a bonus.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I love it! Suck it crybabies! 3D is here to stay bitches!

And Diaigma, you are absolutely right. But there seems to be this hatred of 3D, when it's really a choice.

If anybody doesn't like 3D, then don't f*cking watch that version and go on with your miserable little boring 2D lives!

add me to the "this sucks" list. enough with the 3D. airbender might be cool in 3D, but it is NOT necessary and now solves my theater dilemma (which movies will i see in theaters vs bluray): i will watch this on bluray now.

echo: Enough with the 3d. as clash has proven, films look sh*te when retro-fitted for the format.

Only CGI films seem to work in 3d I think. Our eyes aren't as easily 'fooled' by real environments and people.

  15. T.Clark

Ya, this might look good in 3D...if it was filmed that way. Conversion sucks. Didn't they learn anything from Clash of the Titans?

By the way, NO, some people do not get the option of seeing it in 2D or 3D, seeing how their theater only offers it in 3D.

Who knows, maybe it'll surprise us, but as of now, this is bullsh*t.

  18. The Narrator: The Better Man

I am really tired of 3D, especially after conversion. It doesn't work. Not that people won;t be able to choose but... people won't be able to choose! At least some won't, due to their theaters only showing 3D versions. Thats extra price, for a thing that takes away from the movie, that still looks crappy because its unconverted. *sigh*

Wooow I like this Converted 3D film, U have an advantage of seeing the 3D movie with 2D blurred effect,... cant wait to enjoy this in 3D like I enjoyed The Clash Of The Titans.

    Like ParkWilliams said.
So what if they give people the 3D option?
It just means there's lot of visual stuff in Airbender that some might like to see 3D

  21. ParkWilliams

Like Diaigma said, if you don't like 3D then watch in 2D. That's what I did for both Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans, and now I don't have to be disappointed about it and can still enjoy whatever there is there to enjoy. Stop whining and just accept that it's happening, make your choice, and move on with life.

I feel like crying, all these movies not meant for 3D being crappily converted... I loved Avatar for the fact it was built from the ground up 3D, but please no conversions... especially to movies I was anticipating in 2D...

what a joke....any movie thats converted into 3D is just a gimmick....just like Clash of the Titans......its simple a film filmed in IMAX deserves it IMAX presence....a film filmed in 3D deserves its 3D presence....since it wasnt filmed in 3D i will not waste my money to even bother

  27. Shogun BlizZzard

stupid, their just trying to get money, and hopefully M. knight not doing this to make up for a bad movie, like I've said before this is a very hard story to mess up, I don't really care about the 3-D, i'll see it in 2-D, but if he doesn't have the light-heartedness and comedy, and eye opening visuals i'm gonna be pissed

Hmm, all things considered this may not be a terrible idea. I absolutely love the show and I'm holding my breath for this trilogy to do it justice. So far it's been looking good. That said, I'm not a fan of 3D conversion. Normally I'd say that 3D should be left for a film that is being designed from the ground up with 3D in mind (e.g. Avatar) but seeing as how well they've thought this out and the resources of the studio behind the conversion, I might just give it a chance. I do think that the style of the film (assuming it mimics to an extent the show) could lend itself very well to 3D. Time will tell I guess, here's hoping.
