Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady

Here's what Meryl Streep herself had to say about portraying Margaret Thatcher.

"The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge. I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervor and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses - I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own!"

The Iron Lady tells the compelling story of Margaret Thatcher, a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.

The Iron Lady was released January 13th, 2012 and stars Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Susan Brown, Alice da Cunha, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Iain Glen, Alexandra Roach, Victoria Bewick. The film is directed by Phyllida Lloyd.

@Supes She's no goddess, but I prefer her over someone like Helen Mirren.

@Sly, he called her overrated. She can't be called overrated if the whole of her career has not been seen. However, if he has seen those films, then the opinion is complete and substantial. I'm not picking on him, I just want to know how much of her work he has seen to give full credence to his opinion.

@Ejk1: Then you said it yourself, he's not passing judgement on her whole career, he's just referring to the roles he's seen her in.

@Sly, I understand what you are referring to, but @Narrator said that he has never seen Streep in a role where "she completely took on her character and made me believe it." If he hasn't seen some of her earlier work, than his opinion is incomplete. But if he has, then his opinion is valid.

@Ejk1: That's the thing though, Streep was a hundred times better in her earlier roles. Still good today, but not as great as what caught everyone's attention back in the beginning. So I get what @Narrator is saying; however one can't pick and choose which aspects of a career to focus on to define them totally when they've been doing only slightly above average in her age group in recent years. This role however looks like it'll be her chance to shine once again.

While I don't think she's as flawless as @moviegeek1 makes her out to be, she's definitely a couple levels above your average actress. She has an old school charm about her.

She certainly looks the part. I can feel the free milk at school being snatched from my hand.

@Narrator, have you seen The Deer Hunter or Kramer Vs. Kramer? If you have, then I respect your opinion to the fullest. However, if you have not seen them, then I find your opinion incomplete. Much like DeNiro, Streep's earlier work is how she should be judged.

  9. The Narrator: The Better Man

Lol, I know she's a spunky/great actress, but I can see bits of her coming out in every role. While that happens to all actors actresses, I find hers more noticeable. They seem too forced and detached for me to enjoy, and I think she needs to choose her roles more carefully is all. It's a reasonable argument. :P

@Narrator *slap*! lol, I see where you come from, but she's outstanding in everything, regardless of how drastically different the role is from everything else she does.

    Lol @Zany.

I think I'm the only guy on here that finds this women pretty stinkin' overrated. She's good, yes. And even fun at times. But I've never seen a role of hers where she completely took on her character and made me believe it. Sorry.
