The Incredibles tops weekend with $70.7 million

According to The Hollywood Reporter, After generating incredibly positive reviews, Buena Vista's The Incredibles lived up to its name and proved to be a formidable force at the boxoffice in North America this weekend. The sixth and latest CG animated film from Pixar vanquished an estimated $70.7 million to easily take the top spot.

The debut for PG-rated The Incredibles, which marked the first time Pixar has deviated from the G-rating, was the second biggest animated film opening in history after DreamWorks' Shrek 2, which had a staggering $108.3 million. But Shrek 2 had the benefit of being a sequel and along with Buena Vista's Finding Nemo ($70.3 million) -- which owns the third spot -- was released in early May.

If the estimates hold come Monday morning, the opening for the Brad Bird-helmed "Incredibles" will be a company best for Buena Vista and Pixar, just edging out "Nemo." The opening for the superhero action-comedy was the biggest ever for an animated film in November, topping another Buena Vista/Pixar collaboration, Monsters, Inc. ($62.6 million), and was third best among all November releases. "Incredibles" also generated the biggest single-day gross for the distributor, with $29.4 million on Saturday, beating the first Saturday of "Nemo" ($28 million).
