Movie PictureAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, the Walt Disney Co.-Pixar animated feature The Incredibles sold about 5 million combined DVD and VHS units Tuesday, its first day in release, according to industry sources. While many retailers priced The Incredibles as a loss leader, industry sources estimate that the latest release from the Disney-Pixar partnership generated more than $80 million in total consumer spending on Day 1.

Last week, Touchstone Pictures' actioner Ladder 49, starring Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta, sold about 3.5 million combined DVD and VHS units to both retail and rental outlets, making it the top-selling home video for the week ending March 13, according to industry sources and Nielsen VideoScan, respectively.

Ladder 49 also was the nation's top rental title during the same frame, generating an estimated $9 million in consumer rental spending during its first five days on store shelves, according to Home Media Retailing magazine.

In yet another sign that TV-to-DVD product continues to gain momentum, Warner Home Video's release of Friends: The Complete Ninth Season debuted at No. 3 on VideoScan's First Alert DVD chart for the week ending March 13. Lions Gate Home Entertainment's release of the animated feature Barbie: Fairytopia debuted at No. 3 on VideoScan's First Alert VHS chart and No. 7 on DVD.

The Incredibles was released November 5th, 2004 and stars Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Lee, Dominique Louis, Teddy Newton, Jean Sincere, Eli Fucile. The film is directed by Brad Bird.
