Damn i was hoping to be blown away what with the endless casting news and hullaballo but this was the very definition of underwhelming. I guess they are playing to those who know and care about the story but for someone like me who knows nothing...i need a bit more.

The trailer sucked, but that doesn't mean the movie will . I didn't like the book that much, so I could care less really. I like Jennifer Lawrence; she may be the reason I see it.

@thedude-abides I hope so to, but if you're not, I'll be the first to admit it :)
@ejk1 You should strongly consider picking up the book. It's excellent and, as a series, escalates into something much bigger than The Running Man.

I still don't know what to think of The Hunger Games. Even a fan, @moviefreak97 said it was similar to The Running Man. I'm just not sure if I want to watch that again. But who knows, maybe I'll be convinced to give it a shot.

@moviefreak97 Oh, crap. You're right. Somewhere along the line, I must've mistaken him for Hemsworth. I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of either one of those guys. Either way, I can dig your perspective on the film. Those are all fair points. Looking forward to seeing how this one plays out. I hope I'm wrong about it.

@thedude-abides Well, as you have figured out, I am a fan of the material. And as a fan I can say, in terms of the casting, I've seen most of the actors play similar characters in other films, in which case I feel they've got something good going.
The director on the other hand, I actually agree with you. I know he can tell a good story and handle characters well, Seabiscuit and Pleasantville I love, but I'm not sure he can handle action. That is a concern I think will be addressed in the full trailer. As for the writer, well that's a tough call considering there's two of them. One a novelist, one an actual screenwriter. In regards to your comment about the voiceover, it's a chopped up version of a monologue taken directly from the novel, so whether or not it translates well is yet to be seen.
The plot. Yes, you are correct in seeing it being similar to the Running Man, but it's much bigger than that. The stakes are infinitely higher and the overall character arcs are much more compelling. In the end I think it is my knowledge of the source material that gives me more confidence in the film than you, but trust me when I say that I am the LAST person in the world to accept a film because of previous love. I'm always getting on people's cases about whether or not a film, book, game, etc. is good in regards to source material.
Just to clear up a couple of things for you about the casting however: John C. Reilly is not in the movie and I have no idea why movieweb keeps saying that. And it's not Josh Hutcherson who's famous for Miley Cyrus, it's Liam Hemsworth, who plays a much smaller role in the movie than Hutcherson does. And Woody Harrelson is NOT a character to be taken seriously in this film. So don't you worry about trying to take him that way.

Will have to wait for a a real trailer to come out probably sometime this holiday before I can decide

@moviefreak97 It's just an educated guess really after taking everything into account. I look at the writer, I look at the director, I look at the cast, and I just don't see it. I know the books are supposed to be great, but when adapted to the big screen I've said all along that it sounds like the 2012 version of The Running Man. And after looking at the trailer, at least to me, that's exactly what it looks like. It sounds like an 80s plot line, it really does. I can totally picture Arnold or Stallone running around with that flaming bow and arrow with the little voice over going on in the background, only the voice would belong to a gorgeous woman whom they would be trying to protect only through achieving victory, lol.
As far as my reservations about the cast, the verdict is still out on Jennifer Lawrence. She's had one decent role in her career. Let's not christen her a great actress just yet. I see her more as an Anna Paquin than I do a Carey Mulligan. Josh Hutcherson? Are you serious, lol? Are we talking about the same guy who is famous because he dated Miley Cyrus?!! Gimme a break. John C. Reilly and Woody Harrelson are fine comedic actors, but they're out of their element with this film. Trying to take either one of them seriously is hilarious in and of itself. And Elizabeth Banks, let's just put it like this, she ain't exactly Cate Blanchett.
I don't see those things as question marks. I see them as evidence. After you've seen enough movies like this, you learn to trust what your eyes are telling you and ignore what the fan inside you is saying. I'm not trying to imply that I've seen more movies than anyone, but I've seen enough bad movies to know when I'm looking at something less than stellar. Much like Green Lantern, I would argue that those who like it are too close to the material, and have too much interest in the film's success to actually put what they're seeing into any rational perspective. Josh Hutcherson should be all the proof anyone needs to know how this movie is going to turn out. They might as well have casted Justin Beiber. There wouldn't have been much difference. Again, that's just my opinion. No offense to anyone.
In all sincerity, let me ask you the opposite question. What is it about the film that intrigues you? I'm assuming from your earlier comment that you're a fan of the books, but aside from that, what is it about what you've seen or read in regards to the film thus far has you looking forward to it?

And the tone of the games seems like it's been handled correctly. As soon as the next trailer hits I'll know whether or not Ross can handle the action. And for anyone who's worried about shaky cam, it's perfectly fitting for the story.

Not enough to sell anyone who has major doubts, but it's nice to see some footage. The scene from the book that's featured here is exactly how I pictured it.

9 months agoby @thedude-abidesFlag
XxNickTheFilmCriticXx
@thedude-abides -- I thought that would be considered a "flop"? What if a movie is extremely hyped (Insert movie here) and turns out good/great, but not "outstanding". Does it still "suck"?
9 months agoby @XxNickTheFilmCriticXxFlag
thedude-abides
@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Lol at flame on. In any case, that's sort of my definition of "suck" -- anything with high expectations that doesn't live up to the hype. It's true that at worst it'll more than likely be a pretty decent film, but couple that with the hype it's generated, and I'll be the first to point out the disparity. Again, that's assuming there is any.
