Lionsgate confirms March 23, 2012 release date for The Hunger Games
Lionsgate's highly-anticipated project The Hunger Games continues to move forward with a release date now confirmed for March 23, 2012. Gary Ross is directing this adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel of the same name.

Billy Ray adapted the novel, which follows Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl who is forced to represent her region in the annual Hunger Games event, where participants must fight to the death. In this futuristic world, traditional government has gone by the wayside and America is split into 12 regions, each of which must send young boys and girls to this deadly battle each year.

Despite the violent nature of the book, we reported earlier this month that director Gary Ross was aiming for a more PG-13 approach to the material. The Hunger Games is the first installment in Suzanne Collins novel trilogy. The Hunger Games has sold over 3.3 million copies in the United States alone and has been sold in 41 other countries as well.

The Hunger Games will begin production either in the late spring or early summer. No casting announcements have been made at this time.

The Hunger Games was released March 23rd, 2012 and stars Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentley, Jennifer Lawrence, Willow Shields, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Sandra Ellis Lafferty, Paula Malcomson. The film is directed by Gary Ross.

@vacaslocas - @shelly-allbright - this is based on a young adult series, after all. It could be a hard PG-13 and still keep to the material.

I don't know about anybody else but this just sounds like and over glorified rip off of Battle Royal to me.

    I'm with @Supes

I've read all 3 books and these do not deserve to be watered down but seen in their full glory, but i feel it may be too jam-packed or complicated to fit such a new concept into film in which a way young people will understand

That's how I feel. It shouldn't be toned down to PG-13, the violence can be pretty serious in the series. But, I am still hopeful that it will be great. I was thinking about who would make a good Katniss and I really think that Alexandra Daddario would be great. Her bow work in Percy Jackson & the Olympians was impressive, and everyone who has read the book knows Katniss' strong suit is the bow & arrow. Plus, the rest of her fighting sequences are great and while watching I couldn't help but think of her as Katniss.

If they weren't trying to be politically correct about it and going after that PG-13 rating, certainly watering it down, then I'd be for it. But since they are, I dunno...
