The Hunger Games: Mockingjay will be split into two movies
Last June, we reported that Lionsgate was looking to split Suzanne Collins' third novel, Mockingjay, into two movies, although it hasn't been confirmed until now. The move has almost become a common practice as of late, with Warner Bros. splitting J.K. Rowling's franchise finale Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two parts, and Summit doing the same with Stephenie Meyer's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
The studio will go into production next month on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, slated for release on November 22, 2013. Francis Lawrence is directing the sequel, although it's too early to tell if he will be back for this two-part Panem finale.
The Hunger Games, released back in March, has taken in $404 million in North America, and $678 million worldwide.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 comes to theaters November 21st, 2014 and stars Jennifer Lawrence. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 comes to theaters November 20th, 2015 and stars Jennifer Lawrence. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence.

After a long consideration (approx. 5 seconds) I decided I hate this idea. The first pulled it off in 2 and 1/2 hours. Granted, I didn't read the book, but it is my 2nd favorite film of the year so far.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Lol. For the life of me, I can't remember who would've been so brazen as to have made that fool-hearted comparison.

@thedude-abides -- The producers smile with delight, and the fan girls go wild! Why do they have to make this so much like Harry Potter and/or Twilight?

This might be a good thing if they're really trying to keep all the major/important parts from the book.

@thedude-abides We're bound to think like minded at *some* point. I guess this week is it :) (and next week, when TDKR comes out).

Lol, @dan1. Not unreasonable; I guess with this comment and the Nolan one from the other day it just seems like we're echoing some of the same sentiments of late.
@narrator Agreed.

*show of hands* who honestly didn't see this coming once HP did it and the first movie (HG) was such a success? being that i haven't read MJ i have no idea if it is a better idea as one or two movies. the first book felt rushed as a movie, to me, so maybe it would be better. personally i would have liked to see more in the Capital and more character development in HG. and from what i understand, Catching Fire could also use dual film treatment (again, don't know myself as i am only in chapter 5).
for the record - it really depends on the book as to whether or not this 2-movie idea works or not. fans always complain that the movie is never as good as the book b/c they leae so much out (or change it to help tell the story faster), but then when they make a book into two movies, they whine about greedy hollywood. so my new opinion - make two GOOD movies. don't drag stuff out or make 2 3-hour movies that would do well as 2-2 hour movies. just make 2 good movies (or 1 based on source material) and get on with it!

Just like Deathly Hallows and Breaking Dawn. We all know how Deathly Hallows turned out when they did this. The first one was boring as hell and the second one was just action action action and explosions.

Don't care for the series or the hype around it. This money grabbing move isn't doing them any favors with me either.

I totally agree with this being split into two, its more necessary than the twilight two parter, i mean there is so much story in this it would be impossible to make an entertaining film out of it, i'm sure this will be more like Deathly Hollows

Nope. One giant movie would be just fine. MockingJay would feel disjointed as two parts. It's a full story.

Whilst the film companies see this as a good thing as they will rake in the money, its not a good thing on all other aspects. All 3 books are the same size and while they made a few minor changes the first Hunger Games film was very, very, well adapted for the big screen. So if all 3 books are of relatively the same length, why split the last one into two parts if it can be quite easily fitted into one? I see it as a pointless move and could possibly upset fans or even bore them to have to wait a whole year just to watch a part that they know full well could have fitted into the other one.

next thing we know is that a trilogy of books would turn into 6 films instead of three.

For f**k sakes, can Hollywood stop making final installments into 2 parts already! This is starting to piss me off!
