Lionsgate and the filmmakers of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire are pleased to announce that Philip Seymour Hoffman has been cast in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, Head Gamemaker for The Hunger Games, in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire.

The actor and filmmaker just wrapped a Broadway run as Willy Loman in the revival of "Death of a Salesman" for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. He will next be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master and the indie film A Late Quartet alongside Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken. More recent films include Moneyball, The Ides of March and Jack Goes Boating which marked Hoffman's feature directorial debut.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has over 36 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

Lionsgate will release The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on November 22, 2013.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes to theaters November 22nd, 2013 and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Elizabeth Banks, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Woody Harrelson, Philip Seymour Hoffman. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence.

    Finally Hoffman is in something again!!! It's funny to me that he can go out and win an oscar and then no one hires him for any big roles! Welcome back ol' chum!!!

    Terrific actor, highly under-rated

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx No, I was just confused if that was your rating for the first film, or your prediction for the second. I don't like to judge a film this early, but that's about how I rated the first film, and I don't see any reason why this one would be any better considering I think Gary Ross is a better director than the other guy.

    @thedude-abides -- Ha, I'll take you disagree? I haven't seen the first one, so I can't give a fully valid opinion. But, looking at the director and cast, this looks like it'll turn out decent.

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx There's a few character deaths that should bother people, yes. And I Am Legend was alright, but nowhere near the level some of my friends put it at.

    @dan1 I thought I Am Legend was okay. It had a weird vibe to it, though. If that's the case, then I think you're right; given the look of his prior work, he does sound like an ideal fit.

  11. Nicholaus XX

    @dan1 -- I really liked "I Am Legend" the first time I saw it, but it was only decent, overall. I'll refrain from going into details(at the moment), but - towards the final act - the movie degrades in quality. Are there a lot of emotional elements covered in this film? Because, if so, they couldn't have made a better choice in choosing a director.

    @thedude-abides -- 6/10, decent. Well above-average, kind of decent.

  13. Dan

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx@thedude-abides Well, what did you guys think of I Am Legend? Because this director is ideal for this book. The beginning covers how the other districts look, which is pretty f*cked up.

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Maybe. Depends on your definition of decent. Lol.

    I'd call this a head scratcher, but he's done goofier things in the past for less money than what I'm sure he's making here. Either way, a fine addition to the cast.
