The Hunger Games breaks box office records with $68.2 million on opening day
The Hunger Games has shattered a couple of box office records this morning, pulling in an impressive $68.2 million during its opening day run at theaters across the country. $19.7 million of that take is from Thursday's midnight screenings.

The records broken so far include The Hunger Games becoming the highest grossing non-sequel weekend opener of all time. It also holds the highest non-sequel single day grosses for a film's debut, and it is the highest March opening ever. It also holds the 5th place spot in highest opening days in cinematic history.

The film is garnering great reviews across the board, and currently holds an A+ Cinemascore, which means there will be a lot of repeat business. The Hunger Games shows no signs of slowing down at the box office, and is likely to have pulled in north of $140 million by the time the smoke clears on Monday morning for its exact weekend box office tally. We'll have those numbers for you when they become available.

Expect The Hunger Games to stay at the top of the box office charts for the foreseeable future. Wrath of the Titans, American Reunion, and the re-release of Titanic in 3D serve as its only real threat in the next few weeks to come.

The Hunger Games was released March 23rd, 2012 and stars Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentley, Jennifer Lawrence, Willow Shields, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Sandra Ellis Lafferty, Paula Malcomson. The film is directed by Gary Ross.

    @felipe-11 -- Awesome, man! I'm going to try to do the same exact thing when I get a job - no doubt. I hope time will begin to fly even faster, the anticipation and the thought of Alan posting articles concerning such movies make the wait unbearable..

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx@ghostman I always catch movies on opening day because I don't like hearing any reviews (good or bad), or hype or anything. I find the best way to do that is just going on opening day. Plus, I'm a total movie freek and I just can't wait to see them asap. So Prometheus and TDKR will be no exception :)

    In fact for Prometheus I might even go to a Thursday mignight show, which a I never do. And I'll be watching them both in IMAX too :D

    @combatmadness360 -- Oh, really? I guess trying to avoid as many "The Dark Knight Rises" articles has benefited me greatly, if that's true. You're more than likely right, but I honestly don't think Movieweb has threatened him in any way. They released an article about it, but it seemed to be a joke since not only did they bring up the matter of "firing", but it reaped no differences. Which could only mean the joke was on us.

    Until Movieweb ACTUALLY puts their foot down and does something about it, we're all just going to be mad, spoiled, broken records repeating the same furious post.

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Exactly! and he already has spoiled sh*t for the dark knight rises. If he spoils something about prometheus, I'm going to flip the f*ck out. He's an unprofessional c*nt, and it seems like it's gonna take a beating to make a difference. someone needs to kick the sh*t out of that f*ggot. And i'm not just hiding behind my computer talking sh*t, I'm being serious.

    I know, but I don't want to go to the UK to get such a rating. There are movies that are too strong for PG-13, but too soft for the R-rating(The King's Speech, and arguably "The Passion Of The Christ", among others).

    @cupid Well Avengers will have a 3D uplift and well TDKR you will spend all weekend in the cinema... Ahhhh that final cut needs to hurry up

    @ghostman Nearly right here are the system ratings

    U = Universal

    PG = Parental Guidance

    12A = 12 can see anyone under must be accompanied by an adult (equivalent to the USA PG-13 rating)

    15 - equivalent to the R-rating

    18 - equivalent to the NC-17 and R-rating

    :) this is why THG was cut by 7 seconds to meet the PG-13 rating, as well the fact that well THG auidence is the young teen auidence

    @ghostman -- Yes, and no. "Sh*t" doesn't matter when it's in a PG-13/R-Rated movies. Hell, it barely matter in a PG-rated movies. "Slumdog Millionaire" has two uses of f*ck, the same amount used in "The Kite Runner". So I don't see why one got a higher rating than the other - which is hilarious, because one of the members of MPAA spoke for the board regarding the doc*mentary "Bully". She said they won't be able to give it a PG-13 rating, because that would be inconsistent. Wanna know something ludicrous? They don't want to give "Bully" a PG-13 rating for one scene where the bully taunts and swears at one of his classmate, so it's an obvious "F bomb" issue.

    Here's we things get "inconsistent": Even if the movie has say, 5-10 F words in it, "Bigger Faster Stronger" is also a doc*mentary, and was released in 2008. "Bigger Faster Stronger" features 5-10 F bombs alone, all in one scene. You may ask "Well, what if "Bully" has more?"

    Good question. I'll happily introduce you to "Gunner Palace". "Gunner Palace" was released in 2005, and is also a doc*mentary. "Gunner Palace" beholds 42 uses of f*ck - two used sexually - in it's 85 minute running time. To make short story even shorter, the director managed to convince the board to rate it PG-13 for educational purposes after they slapped it with a big, fat R-Rating - it worked.

    Now, you may ask "Well, why don't they do the same for "Bully"? Especially since the title speaks for itself, and could address the matter and probably save lives(as some say)". My answer would be:

    Because it would make them inconsistent, you silly rabbit!

    @ghostman And thats one of the reasons i didn't enjoy this movie, first they hyped the whole kids gonna kill each other for more than an hour i think which was really boring BTW and when it was finally about to start i was like yes! sh*ts about to go down but it was totally disappointing then came the love triangle, lame...question i'm i the only one that thought the chemistry between Peeta and Katniss was lacking? cause it felt forced to me.

    @huntsman confirmed it on boxofficemojo.com it earned 155million making it the third highest opening weekend right behind TDK and Deathly Hallows Part 2.

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Slumdog Millionaire and Frost/Nixon were only rated R due to the use of f*ck and sh*t thrown into the movie had they taken out the language it would be PG-13. Same with The King's Speech, should have been PG-13. If you want a "PG-15" rating go to the UK they have a different ratings systems ask @jayaottley their R rated films are categorized as "15A"

    @cupid i'm not a little kid :P Just saying teen on teen violence was real violent for a PG-13 movie. It was written out to be R rated but Lionsgate wanted to trim down some of the scenes so that it could be seen by a larger audience.

    @cupid -- Exactly. PG-13 rated movies are starting to become the new PG, in most cases, at least. "Thor" and Captain America should've been Rated-PG, in my opinion. I would love to have a new rating board along with a PG-15 rating. I would really, really love that.

    There's no way in hell "Frost/Nixon" and "Slumdog Millionaire" should be Rated-R, especially if you watch "The Kite Runner" as opposed to "Slumdog Millionaire", their both as bad as the other when it boils down to content.

    @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Although the AMC theater at Downtown Disney has an ETX screen which is basically like a mini IMAX screen i might see Prometheus on that. That's how i saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes on a giant ETX screen!

    @felipe-11: Did you watch the movie. It's pretty easy to follow and many of the people I talked to and heard talking enjoyed the movie and could follow it pretty, but I do understand your point about a lack a little information. The logic is pretty easy to follow because they explain the premise of the movie in the first couple of minutes unless you weren't paying attention and the basic outline of the history of the movies world. The special effects were really good when they used them, but the film didn't need that many. As for the people in the districts it's obvious that their not happy with what's happened to them and they live in fear as president Snow pointed out in the film. I really don't understand your complaints. Even the shaking camera complaint isn't that valid as they basically stopped being noticeable after a few minutes. The only complaint that I truly understand is the pacing. It is a little slow and I understand that some people have a hard time paying attention when there is no explosions, blood or death. As for wanting for information that will come in the next film as it came in the novels. More information about the other districts, the victors, the capital and the world around it.

    To be honest I think the film is generating for complaints from readers of the books and I can understand them more than you. I am not that much of a stickler if a movie moves away from the book some, but many fans of the series have complained. They say the film wasn't long enough. They didn't have enough scenes with Katniss and Peeta in the cave. Donald Sutherland wasn't right as President Snow. They cut out Madge the mayor of district twelves daughter and a friend of Katniss. Those are some valid complaints that I chose to let go off.

    @ejk1: Thank you. Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime series of all time and Spike is one of my favorite characters.
