Ian McKellen has confirmed on his website that filming on The Hobbit will indeed begin in July for a year-long shoot.
McKellen is returning to The Hobbit films as Gandalf.
"THE HOBBIT's, two films, start shooting in New Zealand in July. Filming will take over a year. Casting in Los Angeles, New York City and London has started. The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

As long as Peter Jackson's influence is over the battles and epicness of it though. If we have 2 hours of homosexual staring going on, I'd rather he let Del Toro be the main inspiration.

Finally. So it sounds from the production schedule that we won't be seeing this till summer or winter 2012. As it took a year to edit each LOTR film, and this'll be finished filming by summer 2011.
