@Daiagma & everyone else crying buckets: People will remember her work when they watch her films. You don't specifically remember anyone in the "LotR" - only McKellan and Wood. Turning down "The Hobbit" will NOT break her career. You have to keep it in perspective. Fan boys are overestimating on what "The Hobbit" will do for an actor. She's not playing Bilbo Baggins; it's darn cast ensemble. It's not like she's Elijah Wood who's biggest movie IS LotR since he isn't the actor like Ronan is. Her turning down The Hobbit pretty much PROVES that she has confidence in her acting talent and knows how to pick projects. Due to "Hanna" she's one of the most in demand young actresses today. Just look at the movies she's been cast in: Joe Wright's Anna Karenina (supporting), Neil Jordan's Byzantium (co-lead), and Andrew Niccol's The Host (lead).

I hope like hell those "other projects" are super awesome, because turning down what's probably the most anticipated saga since The Lords of the Rings (and that's including all the Potter films) takes guts.

Damn u guys act like the habbit is an old star wars movie, like sum1 said below.. its prob not in her intrest. she prob wants to work on something better and something she likes, not something she will do just to get a paycheck out of.. sum1 else will take her role dont worry. Just wait and see Saoirse will b in a movie u guys will love soon. and while we'r at it, what if this movie turns out to sh*tty anyways?. like they said below, its nothing new, its old news.

@k-man Yeah, agreed.
Let me just expand on my point a bit. I know a lot of people are expecting great things from The Hobbit, but look at it from her perspective. It's been done 3 times over already. On top of that, the level of difficulty in trying to surpass the success of the previous trilogy would be near impossible, AND she'd be part of an ensemble cast assuming a role that would most likely be overshadowed by some of the franchise's more notable characters.
All I'm saying is, if you're her, this may not mean what it means to everyone else. Why turn down an array of other projects in which you would be the main draw for a two-part installment of a franchise that may or may not live up to the success of its predecessors? Those aren't my feelings, I'm just speaking in terms of hypotheticals.

@skywise - Are you kidding? Her star was made when she was nominated for an Academy Award at the age of thirteen! But yes, I agree.
@dan1 - Agreed, I would do just about anything to appear in The Hobbit.......its only the prequel to the greatest film trilogy in HISTORY. Those "other projects" would have to wait.
@thedude-abides - I see where you are coming from, and that may very well be the case, but it's THE FRIGGIN HOBBIT! There is no greater project to work on, fan or not. Besides, what projects, especially this year, would she really want to be on more than this???? Let's be real, here.
Her career is pretty much set for the rest of her life anyway......but being in The Hobbit would all but guarantee she could be in ANY dream project for the rest of her life.

@thedude-abides - I should say "single" book. Best fantasy series goes to Wheel of Time, hands down. Good luck making movies from those beasts :P

@diaigma I can hardly even remember any of the Lords movies. I should probably rewatch them. lol. But, I've been anticipating The Hobbit since Return of the King. Its about damn time this is in production, really this time.

Diaigma
@corey - exactly.
@thedude-abides - seeing as how The Hobbit is considered the best fantasy book of all time, I'm anticipating something more special than Lords :P

This would have been her breaking point. What people know who Saorise Ronan is other than crazy movie-goers like us?

@diaigma True. If it's anything like Lords, that will definitely be the case.

@thedude-abides - I know what you mean, but at the same time, who is going to remember films like Hanna or Lovely Bones in ten years, or even the near future? The Hobbit will be timeless. She's kinda doing herself a disservice by NOT sticking with The Hobbit, fan or not.

Yeah, I can't blame her for this potential decision. The Hobbit doesn't mean anything to her. She's probably not a fan like everyone else. To her it's just work. And if she's got the option to do one project she's interested in versus several she's very interested in, then it's really not that hard a decision when you look at it like that.

Saoirse is young and beautiful... she Can act (unlike most teens these days) she can make any movie she wants and weither its a blockbuster or not, she makes her roles fit in just right!. Hobbit or not, life goes on and on to better things,

Oh come on that could be a seriously career making movie but then again, it was probably enough just to go around telling everyone that she MIGHT be in it. Anyway after the success of Hanna i guess her star is made anywho.
