Martin Campbell could play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit
There was a story making the rounds yesterday from The Sun which indicated that Martin Freeman had turned down the Bilbo Baggins role because he is committed to the BBC series Sherlock, where he plays Watson. Entertainment Weekly's story reveals that, while The Sun's story was true, it seems that MGM has come up with an alternative shooting schedule which will allow Martin Freeman to shoot both projects.
In August, Peter Jackson revealed progress was being made on The Hobbit. It seems like they are still moving forward and seeking out actors for the movie so we may just hear some official details on The Hobbit in the very near future.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

@Todd89, Hi, it wasn't that Sherlock he's in its a BBC mini series set in the Modern Day he plays Watson

Yes, he is a good choice. As of Sherlock, it's okay but with Guy Richy directing he dumbed it down too much. It's more for thinking, finding clues, real acting, but the film has too much action too many special effects and I felt that Jude Law should have been Sherlock.

I think Martin Freeman Would be a good choice for Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit, I like him in Sherlock.

I was disappointed when I read he wouldn't take the role due to Sherlock (which I still need to watch) commitments, I think Martin Freeman will be excellent, I can see him growing into an old Ian Holm

I agree with Zany. Any news on this project is good news. As long as it isn't news telling us the movie is dead, of course.

Yes, he looks like Bilbo, but the "creepy, pedophile wink" in the pic does not help his cause! ;P

When I think of a hobbit, this guy actually resembles one to me. Very natural, good pick. I'm all for this decision if it happens.

The trick is finding a guy who resembles Ian Holm, and this is pretty good match.

I mentioned him before in a previous news story. I still think he would be perfect for this role, and I can't wait for the Hobbit to hit the big screen!

On an unrelated note, but sill related to Martin Freeman, they need to either reboot the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, or start pumping out sequels. It would have been an excellent franchise if kept in the proper hands - say, for example, Edgar Wright (who, actually had a role in the film). It's one of my favorite series and deserves a private parking spot in Hollywood - front row, preferably. Next to Batman.

Someone mentioned Freeman awhile back in another forum. I think it's a great decision - perfect age, and he looks similar to Ian Holm - although, if they wanted flawless continuity, they would have recast Ian Holm as Bilbo (to reflect the opening sequence of LOTR). But, at 78, he's basically a bag of bones, so I understand the need for a new lead. ;P
Any Hobbit news is good news.
